Shipping scam?
So I bought a National Treasures booklet card on ebay last week. $75 plus $4 shipping. Last Wednesday to be exact. Monday comes along and I get a note saying it has not been shipped yet because the guy was out of town, but he's gonna throw in a few extra cards to make up for being slow and ship it Tuesday.
This evening, Thursday night, check the "My ebay" page, and finally see a tracking number, it's shipped at last! But I also get another note from the guy.
This time he tells me the PO charged him $15 to ship the card. Here's his note:
"Hello I shipped out your card out but the postal service told me the most weirdest thing. They told me because your in a deferent area that shipping was $15.00 dollars now idk what or way but I charged $4 thinking & that it’ll be normal. But turns out it was $15 now I apologize but I’m going to have to asked to be recouped. If you can please message me so we can see how we can work this out thanks."
Sounds like a scam to me. How about you? Any of you sellers ever had to pay $15 to ship a booklet card to Denver? This is NOT an international sale. He's just one state away from me.
Ya know, I try to give people the benefit of the doubt. Mistake happen, and I get that. But the guy has a feedback of over 1200. It's not all as a seller, but he's sold enough stuff to know how to ship by now.
I am going to wait a day or two to respond. He took 8 days to ship, I can take two to respond. I am very interested to hear some suggestions as to a reply.
Thanks for your time.
Edit, checking again, I see the tracking number is for UPS, not the post office.Last edited by JWinn; 08-08-2018 at 11:58 PM.

As a seller, it is his fault if he doesnt know how to ship, or makes a mistake on shipping charges.
Dont pay him any more than you agreed to- if he has an issue with that, eBay will side with you because you are following the agreement that is posted. If you send him any extra money for shipping, eBay will not help you if it turns out to be a scam because the money was sent separately of the agreed upon auction/sale price

I have bought a lot more than I have shipped especially on eBay but I have never heard of that before.
How was the item shipped? Copy of the receipt and tracking number on it? I could see asking some basic questions otherwise I would wait until your item arrives and actually see what the shipping costs says on the package since they shipped in store.

Like Palantri said you won't be held accountable for anymore than he charged you in the ad.
Am more curious than anything
Off UPS page for some additional charges. Not sure if that would apply here or not. Is his fault for paying those fees over saving the money and using USPS instead anyways.

After posting this, I went out to feed my horse, and thought about while doing that. I think I know what happened.
He didn't go to the POST OFFICE. He went to the UPS store. We have one in Parker that I use to send family Christmas presents. Yup, they are EXPENSIVE.
Instead of sending USPS, as the listing says, he let the guy at the UPS store talk him into sending it thru them, instead of just mailing it. You need to be very specific with those guys. UPS or USPS. One is way more expensive than the other.
And no, I do not plan to cover for his mistake. I have to pay for my mistakes in life, nobody else. He's got to pay for his.
But It's good to hear some other opinions.
Yes, I agree, the ebay sale is a CONTRACT, that he must abide by. He can leave me crappy feedback, but that's about it. it's up to me to cover for his mistake, if should choose to do so.
Already explained my feelings on that!

Once you receive the card you are A-OK. Yeah he is the one that didn't follow the contract and shipped differently. He really has no other person to blame than himself when all said and done. I would not leave him feedback either way. Hopefully he will learn from his mistake and not try to leave any sort of negative feedback or be petty.

There's no way I'd ever entertain paying that shipping cost, even as a seller!
A booklet should be shipped USPS First Class for less than $4.50 to even the most remote zones.
Even if he went to the UPS Store (his first mistake), a booklet could be sent SurePost for less than $7. He probably paid for Ground which can potentially be $15 at their retail rate. Check the tracking number and see what service he used.
Receive the card and don't bother messaging him. If he pesters, remind him he's under contract to uphold his end of the shipping charges and you won't be responsible for his ignorance.

One last thought on my end.
You said the seller had a lot of feedback so he has probably shipped numerous things before on eBay. Only way I could see him trying to get one over on you is if he had a business account or one through work and could ship the item for free through that and try to charge extra to recoup eBay/PayPal fees. I have no idea how that works at all just throwing random thought on the wall.
