These will likely look and feel like the originals from the set as they are “update” cards. I think most will consider these over the non-auto version as THE rookie version to own. These cards will be a part of the original series. No one will care Beckett is calling them XRC.
Practically and proper use of resources went out the door when UD decided to make these “updates” now that they have the ability to have these athletes sign their product.
I think it is unfair to the collector who pursued the original non-auto cards, bought packs, boxes, cases, or on the secondary market to now see their investment vanish at the discretion of UD.
I agree, UD likely never considered doing such a positive act for their collectors because we all know what is their only focus is. And this is is why collecting cards is becoming less and less enjoyable. And let’s not believe for an instant that UD and their redemption process couldn’t handles something as simple as considering the original version the redemption. One would only have to mail in the original back to UD to be registered to get the auto version.
And to see UD remake a card which destroys the value of the first version seems utterly wrong without trying to put forth an effort to make it right for those collectors who have the first version.
Even offering the first 300 submission a chance to send in their copy to be replaced would be a nice olive branch. UD could still pack the majority into boxes. But, they didn’t even think about their collectors.

Oh, and you UD is going to do the same for every non-Auto set (e.g. The Cup).

I guess it comes down to what you think you’re entitled to from your card company. Personally, given that they didn’t have rights at the time to Eichel autos and didn’t know if/when they would, I think they did all they could in 2015-16 and don’t have an obligation to forecast three years down the road, nor to “make things rights” or “extend an olive branch” retroactively. Same applies to Hischier.
If you’re a die hard collector, you’ve already got the true RC and now you get the added feature of being able to add an autographed version of the card. I thought that this hobby was “card collecting” and therefore adding new items to one’s collection is a positive. Apparently for you in this situation it’s something different.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

I like this thinking here.
Yeah, it would suck to spend money on the original non-auto'd rookie card (especially if you wanted a signed version), but that is the scenario UD found themselves in years ago. The whole exclusive thing dissappointed quite a few collectors, but that's the way it goes sometimes.
Now, after the fact, collectors finally get a chance to snag a autographed FWA. I think that's great for collectors who've always wanted a card like that for their own personal collections. Now they get to finally have a shot at one.
Sure, it may not be considered a "true" rookie like the card in 15-16 was, but I think collectors will be happy.
If you purchased the orginal as an investment piece, then I could see people not being happy about a "update" card of any sort.
Another reason to collector rather than invest.Last edited by creasecollector; 05-26-2019 at 03:37 PM.

UD just should not be allowed to “update” a past released set. It erodes the secondary market.
My opinion is not based out of entitlement, rather the purity of “card collecting.” It’s like seeing OPC release an updated 1984-85 OPC rookie of Mario Lemieux, add an auto and serial number it. Make it to exact same specifications of 1984-85. Sure it is not his “true rookie,” but that seems disingenuous if the “update” card looks and feels just like the 1984 series and even numbered within that original 1984-85 OPC set.
UD didn’t have their rights in 2015 (Eichel) or 2017 (Hischier), they shouldn’t be allowed to “make up” for it in 2019.
I just think it would be doing the collector right by offering to exchange the non-auto for the auto version since they seem intent to make the past right by making an update to the set.

I don't think it will be that much expensive. His YG is much cheaper than it was on ebay.

So you’ll be taking a pass on Clear Cut when it’s out later this summer I presume.

Yes. Never liked acetate cards and the concept to me is redundant. But redundancy is quite different than “updates.”
As an aside, has anyone noticed the quality control issues with the past few years of UD Ice? The image on back does not align perfectly with the image in front, making the front image look blurry.
I hope UD can fix that issue....

I just hope the back of the XRCs makes it clear they were released in 2018-19, and not in their respective rookie years.
I always say "collect what you like" - but I think there's a danger here, and it's slowly been creeping in with various "update" cards over the years.
If these two cards ultimately get accepted by "the hobby" as Rookie Cards, when where does it stop? Do we see "update" cards done a year or two later for all sets? Think about guys like Pacioretty or Quick. They panned out as big name players, but they weren't so during their rookie seasons. As a a result, they have very few Rookie Cards... and the limited amount that were out there makes the values of those cards much higher than they otherwise would have been.
Pacioretty's RCs came out in 2008-09. It wasn't until 2011-12 that he really broke out as a big-time player. If UD had run off an "update YG" with the 08-09 design, and numbered it #501: Would we call that a Rookie Card? Everyone is going to say "of course not" - but what exactly is the difference between it, and the Eichel / Hischerer coming out.
