They did that for the Lehkonen last year as well, release an auto version after the rookie was not autoed...kind of a way to get collectors to spend more I guess. habs fans wanted the rookie but will also want the auto version

But I think...and somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, the autographed Lehkonens were still part of the original /999 print run, not a separately created card.

I just hope the back of the XRCs makes it clear they were released in 2018-19, and not in their respective rookie years.

I always say "collect what you like" - but I think there's a danger here, and it's slowly been creeping in with various "update" cards over the years.

If these two cards ultimately get accepted by "the hobby" as Rookie Cards, when where does it stop? Do we see "update" cards done a year or two later for all sets? Think about guys like Pacioretty or Quick. They panned out as big name players, but they weren't so during their rookie seasons. As a a result, they have very few Rookie Cards... and the limited amount that were out there makes the values of those cards much higher than they otherwise would have been.

Pacioretty's RCs came out in 2008-09. It wasn't until 2011-12 that he really broke out as a big-time player. If UD had run off an "update YG" with the 08-09 design, and numbered it #501: Would we call that a Rookie Card? Everyone is going to say "of course not" - but what exactly is the difference between it, and the Eichel / Hischerer coming out.

Max also debuted on literally the last day of eligibility for RC's in the 08-09 season, further compounding the lack of autographed content.

These certainly look like they will say 2015-16 on the back of the Eichel and 2017-18 on the back of the Hischier. I would be surprised if they said 2018-19.

Glad I never bought the non-auto versions of these cards. I would be really upset how UD essentially tanked the value of the original versions without offering some sort of replacement process.

And while I don't have all the answers obviously, I think they will say 2018-19 SP Authentic Hockey on the backs. I don't think Upper Deck will try and pass these off as original 15-16 & 17-18 cards, respectively. I really hope they don't.

So a bit of a clarification here:



It does say "2015-16 SP Authentic Hockey" BUT it also has the copyright 2019 at the bottom. It's likely going to end up causing some confusion for people down the road for sure.
