    Have you ever...

Gone through your stash and wondered:

    1. Where did all these cards come from?
    2. How much time/money have I put into this?
    3. How much is all this worth now or potentially worth in the future? ( 5,10, 20, 30 yrs from now?)
    4. How much time/effort would it take if I did want to sell them all?
    5. What else could I have bought/owned instead?
    6. What super high end card or cards could I have instead of all these?
    7. What else could I have done with my spare time?
    8. Insert your own questions.

In regards to #2, would I even want to know how many hours I have spent on eBay
    searching/ogling/buying/selling?
Not too mention all the hours on card forums?

I will also add the answer to all these may just be who cares, it's a fun way to pass time, especially in the winter.

    1) Ebay, mostly. Haha!
    2) Too much...
    3) I mean, my primary Enroth collection isn't going to make me rich, but a few pieces would be sought after I'd imagine.
    4) I don't want to sell, but probably too much time for the return I'd get
    5) Probably more hockey equipment :D
    6) Definitely more vintage / pre-war goodies
    7) Nothing. This hobby has it's own seperate place in my life among other hobbies I enjoy.

    Great thread idea !

    1. Don't wonder.... I realize I've been buying cards for 30+ year
    2. Don't want to know.
    3. Not enough. lol
    4. Minimal. Some aren't worth selling. The ones that are: If I want them gone, I'd probably just make a lot.
    5. I would have just spent the money on something else dumb.
    6. Few, if any. I have a hard time justifying buying high end cards. Always have.
    7. Drink more?
    8. Think my kid will want these one day?

    1. Where did all these cards come from? Nope I know what Im doing with my collection :)
    2. How much time/money have I put into this? Bills are paid kids are spoiled.....its all disposable time and money
    3. How much is all this worth now or potentially worth in the future? Im never getting my money back on my Ryan PC and dont care....I debated about moving some vintage with the recent market boom but they mean more then money to me
    4. How much time/effort would it take if I did want to sell them all? I assume my kids will sell these for pennies on the $ shortly after im gone
    5. What else could I have bought/owned instead? this is my hobby, I guess paying of the mortgage quicker would have been a better idea :)
    6. What super high end card or cards could I have instead of all these? Ive sold so many high end cards in the past that I wish I still had, but there isnt one out there today that I wish I had.
    7. What else could I have done with my spare time? I wish my kids were involved more in the hobby with me, so I guess i could have spent more of my spare time with them. they are far from neglected lol but there should always be more time for the kids
    8. Insert your own questions.

    Great thread!

    1. Where did all these cards come from? Decades of buying, started with boxes, many/many boxes, then vintage sets, now mainly singles so the volume is holding.
    2. How much time/money have I put into this? Far too much, but I do track my spending per month/year so I know what I spend annually (sometimes I feel shame), but good to know and to see the overall spend is going down with no more boxes.
    3. How much is all this worth now or potentially worth in the future? ( 5,10, 20, 30 yrs from now?) I have a spreadsheet so I know the value per item/set (book vs ebay "ish"), I also compare Jan 1 value to Dec 31 value vs spend per year, 2020 was finally a good year to see value outpace the spend!
    4. How much time/effort would it take if I did want to sell them all? Not thinking about that, that is for retirement to fill some of the days.
    5. What else could I have bought/owned instead? Hard to say, would be nice to have a little hotrod of some kind, but that as well would get put up on a shelf for no one else to see!
    6. What super high end card or cards could I have instead of all these? Could have probably focused on some higher end rookie cards, less product/higher value, but I am happy with what I have and I generally have picked up what I wanted (Gretzky RCs, 70's OPC vintage sets, Forsberg PC).
    7. What else could I have done with my spare time? Spare time is overrated, TV, yardwork, chores, I choose the cards.
    8. Insert your own questions.

    Nice Topic

    1. Where did all these cards come from? Too old to remember. Been collecting off and on for TOO MANY YEARS!
    2. How much time/money have I put into this? Could have been retired LONG AGO!
    3. How much is all this worth now or potentially worth in the future? ( 5,10, 20, 30 yrs from now?) My kids will probably sell the 200K cards for pennies.
    4. How much time/effort would it take if I did want to sell them all? Not enough time to do it.
    5. What else could I have bought/owned instead? Nothing this was for Fun!
    6. What super high end card or cards could I have instead of all these? None collected what I wanted.
    7. What else could I have done with my spare time? This is what I wanted to do.

    Great thread.

    1. Where did all these cards come from?...
the internet, as I've only collected Tavares cards since July 2018. I left the hobby 30 years ago and sold everything except for one 1958 Johnny Bower card.
    2. How much time/money have I put into this?... 100s of hours and $1000s as it has become a very enjoyable hobby.
    3. How much is all this worth now or potentially worth in the future? ( 5,10, 20, 30 yrs from now?)... now? approx. 50% of what I paid... down the road? maybe what I paid.
    4. How much time/effort would it take if I did want to sell them all?... don't know, maybe I end up leaving them to JT's two sons when I pass.
    5. What else could I have bought/owned instead?... nothing really, I treat this hobby like throwing loose change into a jar.
    6. What super high end card or cards could I have instead of all these?... there's not really any, as I only collect Tavares cards.
    7. What else could I have done with my spare time?... watched more TV therefore, building the collection has been a lot of fun.

    1. Where did all these cards come from? All the time.
    2. How much time/money have I put into this? I don't feel comfortable answering this.
    3. How much is all this worth now or potentially worth in the future? ( 5,10, 20, 30 yrs from now?) Not as much as what I paid for it, never is.
    4. How much time/effort would it take if I did want to sell them all? I'd probably need to retire.
    5. What else could I have bought/owned instead? Trucks, boats, lol.
    6. What super high end card or cards could I have instead of all these? Maybe some high grade Patrick Roy, Ken Dryden.
    7. What else could I have done with my spare time? Collect stamps.

    1. Where did all these cards come from?

Only with vintage, I've personally pulled 99% of my modern cards. However it is fun to think about the vintage and the adventures they've been on; whom originally pulled them? whom owned them, did they appreciate or value these cards? how many collections have these cards been in before mine?

Well unless I misread your question and you meant "how did I obtain all of these cards?", lol

    2. How much time/money have I put into this?

God knows, lol.... I got back into the hobby after a 20-year hiatus back in 2016 and only because I got an urge to go down memory lane one afternoon while shopping for my nephews birthday. I found myself in the card section, bought some hockey cards and out of a Blaster, Tin and a handful of Fat Packs ($75 bucks in product) I ended up with (2) Auston Matthews YG's (one jumbo) and a handful of other decent cards like a Nylander YG (when it still had value, lol) and some others and sold them and reinvested that money back into cards and sold them and so on and so on and a million cards later (literally, not figuratively) here I am and I would presume I've spent about $3,000 on hockey cards since I got back into the hobby but I've made much more.. For some reason Auston Matthews YG's just keep on finding me.. Matthews and McDavid stalk me and that's good I suppose, lol... I PC Hawks and I cant pull them for the life of me, so anytime I pull a Toews, Kane or DeBrincat I get stoked. Of course that's why I'm always looking for Hawks because I'm always pulling McDavid's and Matthews, oh well.

    3. How much is all this worth now or potentially worth in the future? ( 5,10, 20, 30 yrs from now?)

Well, I'm a collector first and foremost. I mean sure, I wonder on occasion but value is extremely subjective and arbitrary to say the least.. Look, my cards are a lot more valuable to me than I think they would be to someone else - well, I mean my PC that is...

    4. How much time/effort would it take if I did want to sell them all?

Haha, that's not possible - I wouldn't even know where to begin, lol. I've been motivated and tried to get my cards documented in the inventory manager and after a week and 3,500 cards I barely scratched the surface, it was really self-defeating, lol.

    5. What else could I have bought/owned instead?

More cards probably, lol... I don't want anything else, I'm a pretty humble person and hockey cards are it as far as a vice or wants that I have..

    6. What super high end card or cards could I have instead of all these?

None. I mean obviously there is always something you want but giving up what I have? and look, I already have the key cards in the hobby, and look I'm totally satisfied with my low grade Gretzky rookies, so I don't need a PSA 8 or anything... I mean I would much rather have a collection of cards I want er desire than a single card I want... Look, if I had to chose one and keep it my present collection or say an SPGU Connor McDavid True Base Auto #'d 97/97 I'd take my current collection every time because what am I going to do with a single Connor McDavid? I can't sell it or trade it ... Not only that but there are so many cool cards out there, I'm totally satisfied with where I'm at in this collecting adventure.

    7. What else could I have done with my spare time?

Well that's why people have hobbies to begin with, we all do stuff with our spare time but we (collectors) focus that spare time on our collections.. Some people just sit there and watch TV, look collecting cards is a healthy hobby so I wouldn't have it any other way... And to be honest when I wasn't collecting for 20 years I felt like I was "missing something" and when I got back into the hobby it felt all to natural, like I'm doing what I'm supposed to do...
