Insuring Your Collection
I was wondering if anyone here has their sports card collection insured? I have tried a couple of different insurance companies here but nobody will insure for more than 5K. Any thoughts or ideas?

So here is my question to you? Like you I only have a small rider for my collection which I assume you do as well. How much are you talking as there are ton of companies out there and if you do any searching on the internet all you have to do look at CIS as I know they do all kind of collections and memorabilia that you might have. Just be prepared to pay a big premium. To me a better option would be to get a fire rated safe and protect those cards from weather and protection instead of insurance. I mean some of those safes will not be taken out of a house easily and unless they come in with a jaws of life they are not going to be able to get It open.

Any other questions feel free to google your title as there are all type of ads for insurance but as I menaced CIS sets up at the Nationals and is one of the older agencies out there insuring collectibles specifically.

Thank you so much Don. I never heard of CIS. I'm going to check them out. Hopefully have a Canadian option.

Another option is a safety box in a bank.

I got a quote from CIS a couple of years ago and $15k in insurance was only $120/year. I'm in the US, so I don't know if that matters, etc.
My problem with 'insurance' isn't the coverage, it's what will they do for a claim.
I second Don's suggestion of a fire-rated and water-proof home safe. This is what I do. If it's not in my small display case, the big dollar stuff is in the safe. I prefer my cards with me.
Again, this may be a US-based opinion, but safety deposit boxes are going away in the US. An alternate would be using one of the available vault services that have started in the past couple of years. They are fully insured and offer built-in selling opportunities.

@Fred Bear this was exactly what I was wondering. I wanted to know what the steps were should I need to file a claim because the last thing I want is to have to file a claim only to discover that I have to jump through about 100 different hoops!

Curious as well, great topic. I really feel the need to get insurance, is a higher value collection, some great singles with high value but also full sets in binders that don't fit in any kind of safe. Early 70's OPC sets, 05/06 UD complete set, that kind of stuff. Is on my new year's list of To Dos, suppose I should get started on that!
