You guys made me laugh a little this morning, it's funny to see other people "feel weird" about collecting cardboard. I'm 31, and always felt a little weird about my collection for awhile. I never felt ashamed or embarassed, just guilty sometimes to spend so much $$, when I have a wife and kid. (of course I buy them everything they need too!!!)
I always felt a little weird being on this site @ work when I have down time also, being a Fed. Agent and all. Then I found out there are quite a few other collectors on my detail. So now I don't ever feel so strange anymore. In fact I've made some good trades with these guys as well.
I don't really collect a lot of stuff anymore, so I'm pretty picky about trading. I just go for autographs mostly, but I like certain nice patches or RC of my favorite Boston/New England teams.
In fact everytime somebody new comes into my basement and sees my collection in my display cases they are pretty much amazed, and I get many compliments, so that makes me feel better too.
Thanks for sharing everyone, It's nice to know a lot of us are in the same boat.

I took an eleven year break and I'm back at it at age 27! I think it's actually more fun now then it was when I was in school because I can actually afford to buy cards and don't have to wait until Christmas/Birthdays to get any. BTW I use the excuse that I'm going to pass them down to my son when he gets older, that usually works, Lol.

lol---i'm 16 and i collect 'em. You have NO idea how many times I've been talking to girls...or guys even, and they ask me what my hobby is. I say i collect football cards. Most of the time it's "That's retarted. you need to get a life" I just simply reply "I am who I am, and I'm not gonna change for you." lol. might sound a bit harsh but it's the truth. I LOVE the thrill.
Anyways. I was hoping for a box or something, but i ended up getting a retail pack of gridiron gear where i got a RC /100. Also, my uncle got a box of longevity from target for my bro and I to split. I got the JSY. Peyton Manning /250. along with a jimmy williams RC /999 (yesssssss) and a few others. my bro got a RC /29.

This sounds like a group therapy class.. LOL.. So, I wanna play too.. lol. Hi, I am kc4lyfe. Iam gonna be 27 in March. I have a wife and 4 children ranging in ages 2-14. I collect KC Chiefs and the occasional set (such as my Scripts for success set and 06 legends autos) Some ppl in my family call me the auto king. LOL. Since I collect some good sets and actually finsh them my wife doesnt say too much. When times get financially rough for us I sell one of the sets or something like that. somtimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Besides I showed here the prices of all my LT cards from the sets from last month to this month and it makes her happy. She thinks we are making a profit out of it. Hey, whatever it takes to keep her away from me. As long as she leaves my Chiefs cards alone we are gonna be OK. lol Unfortunatley I have 3 sons (so far). So, if I am going to pass my collection down it better be a REALLY big collection. Glad I got that off my chest. LOL. Now I need to go buy another jersey for my frame. LOL

Just a matter of curiosity but was that age range supposed to be 2-4? If you're still 26 and have a 14 year old you had a child before I hit puberty! Not trying to offend here. Just curious.

Im 22 with a Wife and 2 kids and I collected cards untill recently. Can't say that I have completely quit which is what I intended to do but it seems everyone is pulling me right back in. My wife wants me to do an angels autograph collection since thats the home team and she loves them. My brother in law (Kc4lyfe) isnt helping much since hes one card away from a set and is collecting another one and the fact that for X-mas I got a Walter Payon Jumbo gu card and a Walter Payton Rookie card. Is there a 12 step program to kick the cardboard habbit?

I find it absolutely interesting that over a time (on all the sportscard boards I use) I have seen MANY collectors say that they have been ridiculed, scorned and plain made fun of for collecting cards. I am a 42 year old woman...I have been collecting non stop from the age of 23 (also collected a few years from ages 9-13). I have never, not once, by anyone, been ridiculed, laughed at, shunned, or the like for collecting cards. All the friends I have told have been very supportive, sharing their stories about meeting players, going to games, etc. Some have not understood the concept of spending the money on cards, but followed up by saying "I guess it's the same with any hobby though...you spend money". I even got my girlfriend hooked, she is now a vintage RC collector. She has now been in the hobby for about 10 years.
I have never felt out of place or embarrassed about collecting and never will. IDC what people think when they see this old white lady walking around the cardshow floor looking as giddy as a schoolgirl when finding a card I have been searching for or make a great trade/deal.
Enjoy what you like, who cares what others think? If they like you for you, that would include your collecting since it is a "part" of you
Peace~

kc4lyfe: Thanks for the info. My wife read the thread and immediately said, "It's probably his step-daughter." I guess too much Jerry Springer in my formative years sometimes causes me to miss the more obvious solution. lol...
