You can also file for a resolution directly in Paypal. You must do this within 45 days of the sale. This will put you in direct contact with the seller. If the seller does not respond or doesn't wish to refund, the dispute will be upgraded to a claim against his Paypal account provided you can submit proof that the item is not as described.

It sounds like you want your cake and to eat it too. If you're unhappy w/ the card and want a refund he'd at least want the card back. You can't buy something broken from a store, get a refund from them and keep the item. If he doesn't want to refund then send it to SpX and say you pulled it damaged. Thats the other option, but either way I am pretty sure you'll have to send the card to someone.
EDIT: W/ a PayPal claim saying it was not as advertised you'll need to return it to him and include DC#. I have on the 2 claims I had that way, so that will cost you more. Just contact him and try it that way. If you're so unhappy w/ it you'd have no problem wanting to send it back. I have 3 SpX GU cards from this year and none of them have that problem so I don't know what to tell you on that part.
