Chicago Crime Rate - How is Obama Doing?

Since President Bush gets blamed for anything and everything I typed in "Chicago Crime Rates" in Yahoo to see how is the largest city under Obama's watch was doing. Obama has had 4 years or the equivalent to a full Presidential term plus several terms as a congressman (11 years total).

The second link in Yahoo comes up with some interesting stats:
    http://chicago.areaconnect.com/crime1.htm

The average US murder rate is 7 per 100k people. What is it in Chicago? 16.4 or more than twice the national average.

Robberies? Nearly THREE times the national average!

Nearly every statistic Chicago has twice the rate of other cities in America. Is this the "Change" we are looking for?

The third return on Yahoo states the same stats:
    http://www.cityrating.com/citycrime....icago&state=IL

Let me guess, Obama can't be held responsible for the crime in his state? He has been a representative or senator longer than Bush has been in office. He was a congressman from 1997 to 2004 and senator since 2004. That's 11 years and the crime rate is 2-3 times the national average!

I guess when he says change, he really means change.

"Murders in the city peaked first in 1974, with 970 murders when the city's population was over three million people (resulting in a murder rate of around 29 per 100,000), and again in 1992 with 943 murders, resulting in a murder rate of 34 per 100,000.[66] After adopting crime-fighting techniques recommended by Los Angeles and New York City Police Departments in 2004,[67] Chicago recorded 448 homicides, the lowest total since 1965 (15.65 per 100,000.) Chicago's homicide tally remained steady throughout 2005, 2006, and 2007 with 449, 452, and 435 respectively, and the overall crime rate in 2006 continued the downward trend that has taken place since the early 1990s.[68]"

Murders have dropped by more than half since 1992...

Also, is it George Bush's fault that Washington DC ranks 7th in murder rate, with 29.4, using the same figures you provided? Is it his fault that Texas has 9 cities in the top 72?

    Mike,

Attached is the crime trends in Chicago from 1991 (it's highest point) to 2006. Trend is more important than actual numbers compared to other cities if you want to talk about how well someone is doing to try and stop crime. You would make a good politician though because a lot of people will see that and just be like, "Wow, he isn't doing ANYTHING!"

The picture comes directly off the Bureau of Justice Statistics website.

I have the Excel file also if you would like to see it.

And also, if you think there is a crime issue in this country, take a look at President Bush cutting funding to local cops around the country.

What is the point of this post? If you want to indict someone for crime in Chicago, it would seem the mayor or govenor of the state are more in line for criticism. And as another poster pointed out, if you want to blame Obama for the crime rate in Chicago, then why not blame Bush for the crime rate in the United States?

Yeah that must be all Mccain's good work huh?

Maybe you should search this name Joe Arpaio (i give him a hell of alot more credit on detering crime in mericopa county than McCain)

One thing those stats will not reflect are how many caused by Illegals whom can get back across the boarder into mexico

Car theft being a prime example of that

I'd hate to see what would happen if, God forbid, the Cubs won the world series!

while we're at it someone should look up the rate of traffic accidents in phoenix and arizona. I go to school in tucson at the u of a and arizona has some of the worst drivers I've seen. Truly a reflection of the politicians lol
