To be fair YES it is above the national average but ranks right with big cities like Pittsburgh, New York, Dallas, Houston, Philadelphia small towns help lower the national average as in my lifetime(33 years) we have only had 2 murders one was a mob hit for drugs and the other they found a chopped up body in a garbage can floating in the river and ruled it a suicide(SERIOUSLY)..

I suppose I'll chime in here.
It's a bit of a reach to blame crime on a state's senator. As someone previously stated, that would be similar to blaming President Bush for the country's crime rate. Chicago has traditionally had a high rate, so it's expected to be high. Combine that with the fact that unemployment is indicative of a recession (is this Obama's fault, too?), and suddenly the rate is significantly higher. Again, a helluva reach.
