lemme put some perspective on this:
I had found a guy selling an Adrian Peterson Red Refractor Auto #/5 from Bowman Chrome back in April.
I offered him $1,200 for the card....and he laughed me off demanding AT LEAST $1,800.
I told him no way and he scoffed at me saying he was going to send it into beckett and get it graded and sell it for even MORE
months passed by and boom i saw the card on ebay....graded an 8.5 with a 9 auto. i was disgusted lol...from the look of it the card looked fine, no defects, but that 8.5 was like a black eye.
so for a guy who wanted upwards of $2,000 for that card back in april had to settle for $700 something...i believe it ended today.
the lesson of it all....modern grading sucks and is pointless and will MORE LIKELY lessen the value of a card rather than raise it

The buyer now knows that the card isn't mint and the auto isn't perfect. That's what grading is supposed to do:provide a proper determination of the grade. An 8.5 is still a high grade card and most often better than what you receive on ebay described as mint.
With an auto card, IMO, the auto grade is given more weight by the buyer than the grade for the card it's self.

It's worth it to different people for different reasons. One great use is once it is in the Graded Slabs, you don't really have to worry about them anymore. I.E. They are so well protected. Not to mention the value or the scarcity of the grade and population collectors.

I agree you can't beat the protection and the info that is recorded for all graded cards.

Costly mistake for that guy, cards numbered /5 aren't mean't to be graded to resell. The point of grading to resell is too distinguish a card from others. When there is only 5 of something people will pay high dollar regardless. If I was him i would have sent an attachment saying "if this card grades under a BGS 9 just authenticate it and slab it" then you won't have the ugly 8.5
8.5 isn't actually a bad grade but peoples perception is what brings the value down. When you can search ebay and just buy 9.5's nobody wants anything less.
They would pay more for a raw card in worse condition. He should have cracked the case and sold it raw.
Don't bash grading, its a great thing.
