Because Joe the Oil Baron (not to be confused with Joe the Plumber) is lowering the prices to make McCain look better. After the election ends, no matter who wins, there will be no need to do that anymore, and the soul-shredding high prices will return instantly.

Its currently $2.39 in my neck of the woods. I also think the price we rise after the election.
