Would that be likely? I dont want to buy the equipment if I may have problems. It would be going through two floors as you said. Would there be a better alternative?
Also, I know I still need to get a router. First, are there some that would not be compatible with my internet connection? On my ISPs website they have a list of 'qualified' modems and routers, but it only lists a few. Would other work as well? If so, are there any that you would suggest that work well, have a strong signal, and are relavtively inexpensive if possible? I only need it for my Xbox so I dont want to spend a fortune.
As you can see I have no clue what I'm doing with all this, so thanks for everyone's help.

As somebody who has played with both type of connections I would highly advise trying to get your router closer to your system for a hard wire. I don't know how many people you have running across the house, but you may want to consider getting a ethernet cable to run from the router to your system. Wired connects are 100X better IMHo. If you are dead set on having the 360 on a wireless connection what you will need to do is get the 360 wireless adapter. Although I can not confirm of any problems by using the adapter you listed first, it is not worth the money or the chance of failure.
As far as buying a router to plug into your computer. Here are somethings that you will need to keep in mind.
#1 What kind of land line connection do you have. If your phones are cordless 2.4 GhZ connections you will need to try and get a special router that will not interfere with your phone. Many phones will cross paths with your wireless signal and you will disconnect from the Internet MANY times.
#2 Check to make sure the router you get can support a signal strength of at least 3.X(not sure of the exact number) mega bytes per second. If you buy a router which supports less then that, you will broadcasting a weaker signal.
Most routers will do just fine for you. I don't think I am forgetting anything big at the moment but I will PM you if I am. A solution I would also like to say is that cordless phones may want to be replaced if you are looking at hardcore gaming. My settings here can include 2 wireless and 2 wired connections at one time. I had many issues with my phone disconnecting the wireless signals when in use. If you buy a new wireless phone on a different frequency(1.6 is the new one I think) it will help you out IMMENSELY. You don't have to look into this right away as it is worth testing out the router first.

I agree %100. You wont have fun at all if your playing wireless and you lag a lot.

Not true bro, i use wireless, and unless there is a problem in the area, I won't lag at all. Now, when you try and host a game, like GOW, it tends to lag a bit, depending on who plays in the game

Yeah I know, but if his router is is far away like he wants he will have signal strength issues and will lag, or at least thats what happened to me until i just hardwired it.

Yeah, true, if it's far away it can cause problems. Just go direct, it's the best thing to do

Thanks for all the advice. If I hardwire it, would I have to run cords all the way from my computer to the Xbox?

Yes you will. You will need to have a router to plug in your ethernet cord from the router to the system. If you are able to move your computer closer to the stairs, and the TV/system is close to the stairs as well it will limit your distance to just stairs where the family would have to watch out for a cord on the floor. I hard wired my system with a 25 foot cord and it just blocks the second bathroom.
