Why do YOU watch American Idol?

My wife was watching this last night and, since the tv is directly in front of the recliner and I had to rock our 6 month old to sleep, about 30 minutes of this drivel seeped into the back of my retinas. Lo and behold, my eyes started bleeding and all intelligent activity in my brain went into complete lockdown...ok not really, but I could actually feel myself getting dumber and a little bit of my soul died as well.

So I just wanted to ask, why do people watch this? Are people really that excited to see who the next pretty boy/girl with a decent voice Hollywood will package as a "star" and then stuff down our throats at every given chance? Or do you like to watch other people's delusions of grandeur come crashing down when Simon tells them they're horrible when they, for some reason known only to God, actually thought they could sing?

In case you haven't notice, I hate American Idol and all the competition shows that sprang up as a result. I hate pop music, I hate drama, I hate seeing people act like idiots, I hate that idiots are given airtime on national tv to make other idiots think it's cool to act that way...I pretty much hate everything about it. But I've just never been able to understand why people love it so much, I'm curious...

I watch it to see all the people that really can't sing. It is very funny to me. LOL

The only time I've ever watched it was a couple times with mom when it first started a couple seasons ago. We just sat and laughed at people. haha After that part is over its kind of boring..maybe if they did all country music I'd watch. :)

I don't watch. I've seen a few episodes though. Like Ash said, we watched the first few a couple seasons ago to laugh at people. After that it gets boring. This morning on the radio they were playing some of the people singing and talking about it. Some people really don't need to go on there. You know you can't sing, so why even go..

Because they get to act like an idiot on national tv...and apparently some people want everyone to know they're an idiot.

I watch it but only the auditions. I absolutely love the seeing the knobs that are terrible. The best are the ones that don't know they are and aren't just trying to get on TV. The trick is to DVR the show so you can fast forward through all of the fluff that takes up so much of the program. I think I watched what I needed in about 1 hour of a 2 hour show.

Once the main show starts I'm done with it.

Because I like music, I like TV, I like reality tv shows in general, and I like to laugh at the bad people. I think AI is entertaining. But it's on so much that it often conflicts with what I want to watch. I didn't watch it last year because of that. But I watched the previous 2 seasons all the way through.

I also used to be a hater ;) But I gave it a shot once and enjoyed it and kept watching.

Pretty much agree with this one and Star Cards. I find shows like Real chance of Love hilarious. I don't watch them all but a few. I check out the early stages of American Idol manly to watch people bomb, but I can't watch it for more than 15 minutes at a time.

I despise Reality TV on the basic channels.
