Most kids (I'd say before high school age) don't really have the awareness of what it means to collect, among other things. The sense of innocence is good for unrestricted appreciation, but it is somewhat superficial and unfulfilled until one can understand the meaning of it beyond that. Wow I made that sound too philosophical for a discussion on cards hah...
I agree with this for the most part. I never really "collected" cards when I was younger, I just accompanied my brother on trips to the local sports/card shop. After I finished high school in '06 (and my brother finished law school), he became interested in cards again after a 10+ year hiatus. He pulled me into it, and I have been hooked since.
Being in college now, I don't find much time during the week to trade or buy. I'll buy some cheap cards on eBay from time to time, but even on weekends I can't really get into it. When I am off of classes in summer or winter (and not working) I get into the swing of things much more, and conversely I almost come to a complete stop when classes start again - at those times, like now, I am mostly in the discussion/chit chat areas. Overall, collecting helps keep me grounded to something relaxing outside of the hectic college life of classes, friends and work.

I went over to this kids house and he had like 50 cards but on his desk I saw a Michael Jordan card in a toploader and I went over to look at it and saw that it was an MJ on card auto! I asked him how he got it and said he bought a pack of basketball cards and MJ auto was in there
