You really enjoyed game 6, didn't you Phil?
lolol...
the beauty of sports is this:
to be considered amongst the best, you MUST perform in the clutch. That's what separates Jerry Rice from Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, etc.
If you fail, then you are amongst the rest of us.
Barry Bonds, before his 2002 break-out year in the playoffs, was absolutely below average in the playoffs - something even a diehard Bonds fan would admit to. Then came 2002, and Bonds more than redeemed himself.
Until Prior and Wood perform in the clutch, they are your typical over-hyped superstars, much like Greg Maddux, who hasn't done much in the playoffs, considering the Braves won something like 12 straight division titles.
People elevate Prior on a pedestal, comparing him to Roger Clemens. Right now, Prior couldn't hold the Rocket's jockstrap. Show me what you can do in the playoffs.
Don't be like Greg Maddux, and have 15+ wins in 15+ straight seasons, then losing games in the playoffs. That's not impressive at all
And yes, the fact that Prior is a USC Trojan obligates me to make fun of him at every opportunity......

He's freaking 24 years old for crying out loud. Give him time...he hasn't even played a full season in the majors yet (he was out for over a month last season, but still went 18-6 and was third in the league in K's...behind Vasquez and that other guy for the Cubs, Kerry Wood, who was first). There's a reason you always hear about him...he's a good pitcher. As for being compared to Clemens, you're looking at it differently. He's being compared to Clemens at 24 years old, not the 41-year-old with 300+ wins and 4000+ K's (who got smoked by Prior tonight). Any idiot can see that Clemens has a substancial lead on pretty much any current pitcher in that regard. But when Prior retires in 15+ seasons, let's compare stats and see who was better. Until then, I'm sure you'll regale us with Game 6 tales every time Prior pitches in a GTS game. You sound like a White Sox fan.

That's almost exactly what I was going to say, lol.
Mark Prior and Kerry Wood have been in the playoffs once.
Roger Clemens has been in the playoffs NINE times.
You can't compare them based on their post-season outings.

Sam,
I am an Angels/Dodgers fans. I am also a sports fan who believes that there are VERY VERY FEW SUPERSTARS.
And Prior, believe it or not, is NOT a superstar. He's not even close to being a superstar. Anyone can win a game. Heck, has there ever been a starting pitcher in MLB who never won a game?
But, how many pitchers can carry their team to the World Series?
Orel Hershiser did it for the 1998 Dodgers
Josh Beckett did it for the Marlins
etc.
That doens't mean Prior won't be one..but, the beauty of sports is that you don't "wait" years before you can judge someone.
Prior's making millions and millions. You pay for his salary. I pay for his salary. And every sports fans who watches games, buys memorabila, goes to the ball park, etc. etc., pays for his salary.
That means we are allowed to judged him, on a professional basis.
If Prior really is that good, he will shut me up in the coming years. I hate Barry Bonds...but after everything he's done in the past 2 playoffs, I no longer can say anything bad about him, even though he's arrogant as hell, has his own amenities in the clubhouse that other players do not have (leather chair, 2-3 lockers, etc).
Look at Jerry Rice. No matter how much anyone hates him, they CANNOT SAY ONE BAD THING about him.
#1 all time leading TD receiver, regular season
#1 all time receptions leader, regular season
#1 all time yardage leader, regular season
#1 all time, most TDs receiving in one season
#1 all time leading TD receiver, playoffs
#1 all time receptions leader, playoffs
#1 all time yardage leader, playoffs
#1 all time leading TD receiver, Super Bowl
#1 all time receptions leader, Super Bowl
#1 all time yardage leader, Super Bowl
1987 NFL MVP
1989 Super Bowl MVP
MVP of the Pro Bowl (I forget the year)
Now, Jerry Rice is a superstar. Barry Bonds is a superstar.
Mark Prior is a good pitcher. That's it.
You can't even call him a great pitcher, b/c he FAILED in the playoffs. Josh Beckett won game 7. John Lackey won game 7 of 2002 World Series for the Angels. Livan Hernandez, Mariano Rivera.
Prior choked. So did Kerry Wood. Heck, even Kerry Wood afterwards said he choked in the post-game conference of game 7.
p.s. Sam - this is in all good fun. I love sports b/c it gives me a chance to root for my favorite players and to cast apersions on the players I don't like.
I can rag on Prior until the cows come home (esp. since he is a USC Trojan)...but, in the end, Prior will still have millions and millions. This is all in good fun.
