If it´s for safety reasons than it´s even more weird. The CTT (portuguese postal service) is regarded as one of the best in Europe. Maybe it´s because the Madrid airport has more traffic capacity, i´d be more inclined to that. The Lisbon airport has limited traffic capacity, that´s why they´re preparing to build a new one.
It´s a shame if everything has to go to Spain first...

I was told it had something got do with security. I assume they mean that the Spanish airports have more (or better?) facilities and some shipping companies have no right to fly directly to Lisbon.

It is because they MUST use a shipping service that can be tracked with a signature. The rates they can get are much cheaper than I can get. I looked into shipping a case to Japan but the necessary shipping charges where around $100.
