No one walked out of the theater and thought "Boy, Dark Knight was great because of Christian Bale's acting." If they did (then no offense) they don't know anything about movies.
It was great because of the story and the directing (Among countless other things). Christopher Nolan has yet to make a bad movie, Christian Bale has made plenty.
Chuck is my favorite show on T.V right now and Fastlane was a show I watched and loved at the time. The difference between those shows and Terminator though are styles. They can afford to be slightly goofy/sexy. Terminator however isn't a comedy. You are right that it's unfair to condemn a director for a couple of projects, but IMO.... I haven't liked one single one he has directed. There isn't a single reason for me to believe he will do an adequate job breathing life into the Terminator series.

Heath Ledger was the best BY FAR in that movie
i'm just saying, his success and all of Dark Knight, a lot of people have liked him from that, as well as other movies. :]

i haven't seen all of christian bales work, but what I have seen is pretty good. I'm looking at his IMDB page and here's what I've seen. I thought he was great in every one of these
American Psycho
Shaft
Equilibrium
The New World
Batman Begins
Harsh Times
The Prestige
3:10 to Yuma
Dark Knight
The only movie on that list I don't like is The New World. I recommend Harsh Times to anybody who hasn't seen it, and I loved The Prestige.

I'd also recommend The Machinist to the list about a factory worker who suffers from insomnia, hasn't slept for a year and progressively loses weight. It shocking to see how devoted he is, to get dangerously skinny in the role

As I have mentioned before Iam a snob when it comes to movies. I have seen We are Marshall and it's the exact movie I thought he would make. It was better than his previous work but that isn't saying much. I really do hope Im wrong about Terminator, however (And I absolutely do mean to toot my own horn) I'm usually not.
As far as Christian Bale movies, he is never the weak link in movies, but that's not to say he hasn't done bad ones. My problem with Terminator isn't the cast. You have a one trick pony director, with two screenwriters who I don't think are good, paired with rookie producers. It just doesn't sound like a winning combination.
The Machinist is very good. Some bad(or atleast not good) Christian Bale movies off the top of my head would be.
Reign Of Fire (Kinda cool, but not a good movie)
Harsh Times (Way to over the top and cartoonish)
Equilibrium (I thought it was a cool concept, just not executed as well as it could have been)
Whatever that movie with Nick Cage was. (It's Nick Cage.)
Once again, he wasn't the problem in these movies. The movie probably won't be awful, but it wont be as good as the previous Terminators. Id be willing to bet on it not being "fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes.

Loved it.
I liked Harsh Times up until the end, the third act IMO was terrible. Maybe I need to re watch it again, but I remember feeling very unsatisfied with it. (And not because of the way it ended, something about the execution annoyed me)
