Vezina would definitely give him a boost, but I doubt the Calder will.

It's not like at the beginning of the season, when he was a (relatively) unknown commodity. Everyone has been treating him as a guaranteed Calder winner over the last 3+ months. I don't think winning a trophy, that everybody expects him to win, is going to give him much of a boost.

His rookie cards will still be hot I think, but next year's issues won't be IMO. Also, I think he will spike again when he wins the Calder. ;-)

Sure the calder will give a boost! It's a + if we can expect he'll win it because we know he dominated the others rookies and if Bobby Ryan win the calder ITS SURE his cards will go up why not for Mason?

At the moment in the last years to now this is the more underated rookie goalie in what his cards worth.

RGM81 SAY: ''But right now, if you were to ask me if he'll stay hot, my answer would be no.''

If you think or have doubts like this guy please do it for me STOP collect Steve Mason because you know nothing about hockey....

First we know he has talent no rookie goalie of 20 years old did what he did with a team like Columbus...Please buy the more as you can i guarenteed you he is the next Luongo and his cards will be rare like Crosby cards.

I don't collect Mason, so you don't need to worry about that. As for my hockey knowledge, that's irrevelant to the discussion. The question was whether his hobby love would stay hot, and I gave my answer/opinion. Just because you don't agree with me on a single point is no reason to say that I know nothing about hockey. I know enough about this hobby to know that people don't stay hot over a prolonged period of time - collectors are a very fickle bunch. Look how quickly people jumped on the Varlamov bandwagon; do you think that will last?
Finally, you are in no position to "guarantee" that Steve Mason is the next Luongo. Unless there's a Mike Milbury type running around in Columbus will trade Mason to a Canadian market where he'll get some serious exposure, don't count on it happening. That's the difference, though, between what you're saying and what I'm saying. You're dealing in absolutes, I'm just speculating my opinion.

Look what the Calder did for Patrick Kane.

Ranford is right on the money with every he has said so far. The only thing I might add is that Columbus is a very good place for him to be playing because Ken Hitchcock is a defensive extremist in regards to the system he emphasizes. That should definitely help him put up solid numbers.

Hobby wise, it may take awhile, like 5-10 years of great play before he gets his due. If you remember correctly, Brodeur was looked at the same way Nick Backstrom was for the first 5-7 years of his career. He got passed over on several Vezina's, in which his numbers were otherworldly. Then, he does something Roy could never do, lead Canada to Olympic gold, and people realized he was the real deal, and instantly his value sky rocketed. I see Mason following the same career path, IF he is able to continue his strong play. It will be interesting to see how he fares when the Vezina voting is released this year; i.e. will he get enough support to realistically challenge Tim Thomas, or will he be one of the pity nominees who ends up with like 6 votes.

if you want Mason to go up just buy every cup rookie he has when it comes out and only sell the one with his jersey #.

I don't think the Calder will give him a boost, because in the minds of collectors, he's already the rookie of the year. Why should it give him a boost? Why does playing well in the playoffs (like Varlamov) give someone a boost?

They get the boost because it creates more interest in the player, and thus more demand for their cards. How many people have bought Steve Mason cards over the last 4 months, because he *IS* the best rookie this year? Those same people are going to get even more excited about him, when the NHL recognizes what everyone has known for a long time? I doubt it.

I just think people are already paying the "rookie of the year" premium.

If Bobby Ryan won the Calder, it'll be a shock to most people. That probably will create more interest, and demand, for his cards.... because no one has treated him as the rookie of the year previously.

Like I said.... a Vezina trophy, now that would give Mason a big bump. He'd be the first rookie goalie since Belfour to win both.

Sure the Calder will give a boost! It's a + if we can expect he'll win it because we know he dominated the others rookies and if Bobby Ryan win the calder ITS SURE his cards will go up why not for Mason?

Right on. Winning a trophy that everyone expects him to win in the first place will do nothing for his hobby value. That is like saying "when Brodeur makes the Hall of Fame his cards will go up". The reason people are buying these cards right now is partially influenced by the fact that they already recognize these things. Varlamov cards will not go up when (assuming the Caps win it all) he wins the Conn Smythe simply because they are already rapidly going up along the way there. By the time he may potentially win it, his value will already have maxed out because people bought the cards in anticipation of his success. And even if they do, they will surely drop off again once August and September rolls around, ala Cam Ward.

EXACTLY. It didn't do a thing for him. Why? Becuase everyone was already paying a big premium for his cards..... becuase he was the best rookie that year.
