We already have a BluRay player... and yes, it will be on a 52 inch HDTV using an HDMI cable.

Cheapest PS3 (brand new) right now is the 80GB model at $400. Cheapest 360 (brand new) is $200. The $200 doesn't come with a hard drive to save games so you may have to get the $300 model if you were to buy it brand new.
If money isn't an issue, I would go with the PS3 unless you wanted to expand your game library past sports games. PS3 also has an internet browser. Fire that browser up on your 52 inch.

Get a 360. Online play is not free, but the quality and performance tops the PS3. It's only $50 bucks a year, and if you can't afford that then you will really have a hard time paying the $300 for the system alone haha. The system will most likely break down on you but Microsoft will repair it for free now (3RROD). The game selection is also HUGE compared to the PS3. There are more Xbox 360 players out there too, and it has some really good games that are restricted to xbox only (Halo, Gears of War, ect.)

If you want to play just sports, then go with the PS3 because of the better graphics and you don't need all the extra things the 360 has.

WHY even take the chance when there is a system out there that WON'T BREAK DOWN on you!?!?
PS3 for sure! More powerful operating system, better graphics, more fluid frame rate, built in Blu-ray (I know you said you have one already but), Free online play which isn't as bad as the 360 Fan Boi's make it sound, Controller is more comfortable and to me the biggest reason .... the PS3 has no known issues and doesn't break down like the 360. IMO if I'm buying something for that amount of money I don't even want the remote chance that it will break within 6 months (like mine did).
PS3 FTW

I own them both and for the most part I play most sports games on the 360 as I like the live much better than the free online on the ps3.
I know quite a few people like me who own both systems and they prefer the 360 also for most games. Now there are some really amazing games for the PS3 that won't be on the 360 and vice versa. if it's only going to be sports titles like you're saying, i'd probably let the choice come down to how many people you know that have each system. If the majority of your friends are on the 360 then choose that, if it's the PS3 then go w/ that.

I do not plan on playing online ever. That is not a relevant factor for me. Nor do I ever plan on branching out from the football games (except maybe to a hockey or baseball one).
have they fixed that 360 problem with the processors crapping out?

As far as I know they have not fixed the RROD problems and I don't think they plan on fixing it either.
