July 13, 1985 - Live Aid Concert

On July 13, 1985, at Wembley Stadium in London, Prince Charles and Princess Diana officially open Live Aid, a worldwide rock concert organized to raise money for the relief of famine-stricken Africans. Continued at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia and at other arenas around the world, the 16-hour "superconcert" was globally linked by satellite to more than a billion viewers in 110 nations. In a triumph of technology and good will, the event raised more than $125 million in famine relief for Africa.

July 13, 1960 - John F. Kennedy won the Democratic presidential nomination at the party's convention in Los Angeles.
July 13, 1863 – New York Draft Riots: In New York City, opponents of conscription begin three days of rioting which will be later regarded as the worst in United States history.

July 14, 1789 - Storming of the Bastille; French Revolution Begins

Parisian revolutionaries and mutinous troops storm and dismantle the Bastille, a royal fortress that had come to symbolize the tyranny of the Bourbon monarchs. This dramatic action signaled the beginning of the French Revolution, a decade of political turmoil and terror in which King Louis XVI was overthrown and tens of thousands of people, including the king and his wife Marie Antoinette, were executed.

July 14, 1881 - Outlaw William H. Bonney Jr., alias Billy the Kid, was shot and killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett in Fort Sumner, N.M.
July 14, 1921 - Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were convicted in Dedham, Mass., of killing a shoe company paymaster and his guard.

I've always been fascinated by July 14. In lots of places around the world it's celebrated as Bastille Day, or the day the French revolution began. Big moment for France back when they were modeling themselves after the newly independent United States.

Several of them are from my head. I'm a history teacher so this stuff comes naturally. Like today, I knew it was Bastille day before today began. However, I also get daily emails from History.com about the "Today In History" and there is another site that I find these facts on.
