August 5, 1862 - American Government Levies First Incoming Tax

In order to raise funds for the increasing Civil War effort, the American Government levies, for the first time, a tax based on income. Ordered under the Revenue Act of 1861, the government collected 3% income tax on income over $800. The act would later be repealed by the 1862 Revenue Act but set the foundation for the flat rate income tax that Americans have come to know and love.

Haha. I don't have to pay taxes yet, but if I make a lot of money, I don't want to pay more for my work.
