August 5, 1862 - American Government Levies First Incoming Tax

In order to raise funds for the increasing Civil War effort, the American Government levies, for the first time, a tax based on income. Ordered under the Revenue Act of 1861, the government collected 3% income tax on income over $800. The act would later be repealed by the 1862 Revenue Act but set the foundation for the flat rate income tax that Americans have come to know and love.

True that. I'm glad you picked up on the sarcasm that I laid on there at the end. A flat rate would sure be nice, wouldn't it? Oh well I guess.

Haha. I don't have to pay taxes yet, but if I make a lot of money, I don't want to pay more for my work.
