***Scrimmage against the Browns***
McGahee Scores Four TD's
Associated Press
08/07/2004 6:30 PM
Willis McGahee scored a total of four TD's in Saturday's scrimmage with the Cleveland Browns.
Four touchdowns, one big stiff-arm and a standing ovation: Not bad for Willis McGahee's first time competing in an NFL setting.
''Today was a good day,'' the Bills running back said Saturday after a scrimmage against the Cleveland Browns. ''I was a little nervous on the first series, but after the second series, when I kind of got into a rhythm, everything went good for me.''
Selected 23rd overall in the 2003 draft, the former University of Miami star missed all of last season recovering from reconstructive surgery on his left knee, which he hurt in the national championship game against Ohio State earlier that year.
He experienced his first full-contact session in training camp earlier this week, and the scrimmage Saturday was McGahee's first time lining up against an opponent since he was hurt.
After scoring up the middle on a 1-yard plunge to cap a six-play, 65-yard drive, McGahee scored on three consecutive plays from the 2 during a goal-line drill. First he went off tackle to the left. Then he swept left and dived into the end zone, sneaking the ball just inside the pylon. And he finished with a strong run, punching through a small hole off right tackle.
On his way back to the sideline, McGahee was greeted by a standing ovation from the crowd behind the Buffalo bench at the Bills training camp site in suburban Rochester.
''It's good to know that they're behind me and they want to see how I do,'' McGahee said. ''And I'm just glad to score and let them know that I can still do certain things.''
Although looking tentative at times, he finished with 10 carries for 40 yards and one reception for 8 yards.
McGahee's most impressive run came at the end of a 5-yard gain. Sweeping right, he stiff-armed one defender and then dipped his shoulder, knocking over Cleveland defensive back Michael Jameson before the two tumbled into the sideline.
''That was good to see,'' Bills coach Mike Mularkey said. ''It's your first time in live-action since that infamous game, so I think the rust is coming off slowly but surely.''

I wouldn't be laughing just yet. Just wait till the Pats defense has to face McGahee AND Henry. They will be almost impossible to contain!
Oh ya, there's also a HEALTHY receiving core this year for the Bills. More targets for Bledsoe to throw touchdowns to.

***ARTICLE ON THE YOUNG BILLS***
Young Bills Show Positive Signs vs. Browns
Gregg Pastore, buffalobills.com
08/08/2004 3:15 PM
Lee Evans caught a 49-yard pass from quarterback Travis Brown.
Saturday marked the fourth consecutive year the Bills and the Browns have met for a preseason scrimmage. It also marked the live debut of running back Willis McGahee and Buffalo's top picks Lee Evans and J.P. Losman.
"We got to see some of the younger guys and what they were going to do in their first live competition," said Mike Mularkey. "It's hard to give them a grade right now, immediately, but I'm assuming it should be good watching it on tape for some of the young guys."
Unofficial totals show McGahee carrying the ball seven times for 34 yards and a touchdown during regular scrimmage series. He also managed six yards and three touchdowns on three carries in goaline situational work.
Wide receiver Lee Evans made one reception for 49 yards and quarterback J.P. Losman was 4-for-4 for 39 yards passing and found the end zone on a 1-yard bootleg.
"I think J.P. (Losman) finished up strong," said Mularkey. "It was a good test for Willis (McGahee). There were a lot of good things that happened out there with some of the younger guys. You can't point them all out but (I saw) a lot of good things."
Evans displayed the game-breaking speed that intrigued the Bills enough to make him their top pick in the 2004 draft when he ran by Browns six-year defensive back Daylon McCutcheon and hauled in a 49-yard Travis Brown pass.
"That's a read play on his part," said Mularkey. "If he can win deep, we want him too. That's his intent. That's funny because that play we're either 50/50 on. You either win or you don't. Lee has done well with it."
J.P. Losman's highlight of the day came when he executed a play fake on the 1-yard line and ran the ball around the left end untouched in the end zone.
"It was just a little fake to the right and I wanted to make sure that I didn't slip," said Losman. "I told coach the last thing I wanted to do is slip in front of all these people because it's kind of wet down there. I just kept my footing and ran it in real quick."
Evaluating his performance on Saturday, Losman says he wanted to lead the offense on two scoring drives.
"I only got one series in there where we scored," he said. "Every quarterback wants to be perfect."
After the scrimmage, Mularkey told the media he was pleased with what he saw from his rookie quarterback.
"He started slow, which I would have been absolutely shocked if he didn't, especially at that position," Mularkey said. "He gradually got better and it looked like he got more comfortable in the huddle. That's the big key. What does your body language say in the huddle to the rest of your teammates? It got better as it went and confidence is big, especially for the quarterback.
Losman was quick to admit he's getting more comfortable as an NFL quarterback and that every day is a huge step in his development.
"I can't wait to come out here next week and see how much I improve from one week to the next," said Losman.
The Bills have off until Sunday evening when they are required to report for meetings. Practice will resume on Monday when the team is on the field for morning (8:45-10:45) and afternoon workouts (2:45-5:15).
"I'm just going relax," Losman said of his plans during the team's time off. "We've got 24 hours off so I'm just going to think about my whole experience in camp and what kind of person I want to be when I come back next week."
