why doesn't the rangers just accept it get some young players and develop them, instead of signing these types of guys. They're just setting themselves farther back in the long run.

they have been doing this in the past few years, ie Lundqvist, Callahan, Staal. There are a few guys in the works that could be pretty good impact players in the years coming, such as Anisimov, Grachev, and Gilroy. They also had Prucha and Dawes who started out strong for a couple seasons then just died off. And bringing Messier onto the team is a definite morale booster for players and fans.
