It depends on your definition of cheap. Cannon makes some of the best scanners around.

I recently purchased a new scanner for the same reasons you are looking. I bought a Canon CanoScan LiDE 100. Best $60 I ever spent. It self crops all my cards (as long as they are in top loads), scans fast, saves and names all files in JPG format. Also it used a USB for both data and for power. It is nice that I can run it off my laptop without needing a plug for my scanner. It also fits right in my laptop bag for easy transport. I have found it scans cards, pictures, and documents all the same in excellant quality.

I would avoid HP if I were you. They have a long history of problems. Cannon is the way to go for scanners.
