I have my own opinions but just wanted to see what others thought:

why are people up in arms about this? Reagan and Bush senior have done the same thing with a nationwide speech geared towards kids in school. And its voluntary on all schools behalfs. Some people just complain in hopes of seeing their name in print somewhere

"The address scheduled for September 8, 2009..."
the second tuesday in september during a president's first term....let's just hope he doesn't read them "The Pet Goat"
just kidding guys...
honestly, why would this be a problem?
"I'm going to be making a big speech to young people all across the country about the importance of education; about the importance of staying in school; how we want to improve our education system and why it’s so important for the country. So I hope everybody tunes in."
if parents are worried that Obama will be hypnotizing and brainwashing their children, then they can simply have their children not participate, or even better, they can watch the speech themselves (im assuming adults will be able to participate too?) and then talk to their children about it at home
in the outline, study guide, activity sheet or whatever you want to call it...it talks about having teachers talk to students about past presidents, why it's important to pay attention to what elected officials say, have students imagine being the president and delivering a speech to the nation, ask questions, and create goals...i dont know what im missing in the lesson plan that makes them think brainwashing?

Some lady here at work is all in a tiffy over it, saying "my kids WILL NOT go to school that day because of this, BLAH BLAH BLAH"
I had to ask her ... so your going to let your kids miss out on a day of education because of your political views!!! AWESOME!!
No wonder why Florida ranks near last in education!!

Some Parents Choose Not to Allow Their Kids to Hear Obama's National Address
Regine Gordon, of Tampa, Fla., is among a growing number of parents across the country who are troubled by Obama's plan to address elementary, middle and high school students directly on Tuesday.

As long as he isnt spitting out his left-wing views I dont see a problem with it at all. No, I dont like Obama at all, but he's still the president so if he wants to talk to kids about stuff other than left-wing/right-wing things then go for it.

If it's a strictly motivational speech, great...kids need people they look up to telling the to stay in school and giving them the goal that one day they could be President. But:
how we want to improve our education system and why it’s so important for the country.
The plan for grades 7-12 includes a "guided discussion," with suggested topics: "What resonated with you from President Obama's speech? What is President Obama inspiring you to do?"
This could very easily turn into "Here's our plan for reforming education...here's what you can do to help..." Any crossing over into political topics and urging action on political issues I would have a big problem with. And especially if something aside from education was discussed, like say the health care bill that he's already going to get a big, free, prime-time advertisement from the networks for.

Right, we already have celebs brainwashing young people. We don't need the president doing it. Keep it unbiased and go for it

I wonder if his speech will be like that of former President Bush who gave a televised speech to 4th graders in 1991 about the IMPORTANCE OF KEEPING DRUGS OUT OF SPACE!
(Question)
My question is, do you think current problems like drugs and crime will follow us to space?
(The President)
There would be no room for drug use in space. The life that Charlie's described for you and you've heard about from La Porte, Texas, today, is too complex: One person's life depends on another. And you can't have any kind of thing like drug use in space.

I wonder if a lot of 4th graders in Texas had to stay home from school that day so they wouldn't get brainwashed? Please feel free to message me here about my electronic bay & COMC listings
