I don't see how this is a valid question since you do not compete directly against other teams.

    Brad -- I don't know either

I have a list of all the gymnastics medal winner from the Women's division from 2000 all the way to about 1952, right about when women were competing in gymnastics

And I couldn't figure out how you tell if a United States gymnast beat a Russian.

After all, if Mary Lou Retton won the gold medal, that meant she beat out every gymnast that entered the Olympics, which would include the Russians.

So, I was pretty confused, and eventually just gave an answer and gave up

well the trick with the question is also the fact that they were the USSR and fairly recently Russia... and I am not sure what they were called in the olympics before the commie revolution.

Ya but the Commie's came around in about 1920 so the list doesn't go back before that. Plus, the US Olympic team didn't enter female gymnists back then. I am confused. I am pretty sure by the 92 games, the USSR had fallen.

Okay, the answer to the question was Phoebe Mills like enigma said... but I'll give credit to Fuba too. Fuba, from now on give a full answer to the question.

By Russia I meant The Soviet Union also... it's all the same. '88 was the first year an american female won a medal in an individual event. Sure, there were 3 women who won an individual event medal in '84, but Russia's gymnastics team boycotted that olympics, so those '84 winners did not compete against Russia.
