I'm straight edge. turning 21 in August. I have been straight edge since i knew what it was... although i never smoked or drank before that. it is really tough with people around you who smoke and drink though. not because its tempting but because its annoying that they ask you to all the time. In my opinion its the way to go. I don't want to start a debate or anything but the idea of breaking the law and getting a "buzz" for a few hours does nothing for me.

I'm in the same boat you are. I never have before.

WOW that's not true, you are obviously ignorant on the topic. I know a thousand edge kids and they wouldn't hurt a fly. The most violent act edge people do is mosh at metal/hardcore shows. My drugged out friends have threatened to beat me up because I'm trying to get them to stop and clean up, but they're so addicted they can't see how they're treating someone who is considered a "friend". But you don't see that in the news do you?

Stay clean guys, and don't let ridiculous messages like this change anything you stand for!

I admit ignorance on the topic. There were lots of gangs at my HS but Straight Edge wasn't one of them. I've never personally interacted with them.

So what the article says isn't true, eh? Are you saying that National Geographic are liars?

Yes I absolutely am! They too must be completely ignorant, and are distorting a good thing because of one bad story.

Hey Umpy it's cool man, I agree with you that there are probably straight edgers out there that wouldn't hurt anyone and don't care what anyone else does BUT there are always bad apples on every tree man. I can tell you from first hand experience that when I was younger and going to Punk shows there was always a handfull of straight edgers that were there trying to muscle everyone around just because they thought they were better than the next guy because they didn't smoke or drink or do drugs.

The media doesn't report on good news anymore, it doesn't sell. So unfortunately the rap that Straight Edgers take is that they are trouble ....

How many National Geographic reporters claim to be a part of the straight edge community?

Ok, I can respect that. Just don't come on a straight edge thread bashing straight edgers, because like you said we're not bad people. I hope their actions haven't distorted your view on other straight edgers, and sorry they had to be forceful. But that's just not in most peoples nature, so I would say they are the very slim minority "bad eggs" in the straight edge community.

What difference would that make really? How many National Geographic reporters were part of WWI or WWII or have lived in the jungles of Uganda?

They are reporters who have done their due dilligence in researching and reporting on whatever the topic may be at hand. You can't discredit someone's knowledge of a subject just because they are not part of it.

edit: I don't carry grudges, I could care less what a straight edge kid thought of me back in those days. I smoked, I drank, I partied and I wouldnt' have changed a thing about it and there was nothing any of them or anyone else could have told me to make me do anything differently. Every body has the choice to live their lives as they please and I don't discredit anyone for which path they choose.

First part of your statement - That is the definition of ignorance, and that's where bad reporting and false images are created.

Second part - I agree you are able to do w/e you please, and I am not looking to change that, but in my situation I had friends pushing me away on the sole purpose that I didn't use and they did. So naturally I tried to get them back w/o falling down their path (which I did for a few months) because I could see they were ruining their lives. Some of them did come back and stayed clean, and some of them decided to keep using and are high school/college dropouts, some of them are in jail, some of them are living at different places every week (pretty much homeless). The one thing that all my still using acquaintances (I wouldn't really consider them friends anymore) all have in common is lack of responsibility, hatred, and are in some sort of trouble. This is what most of us straight edgers see, so we take pride in staying clean and voice it because a lot of the metal/hardcore scene does drugs. We're not saying we're better or anything, but you guys can wear your marijuana shirts and we can wear our XXX shirts... I'm not looking to intimidate anybody over it though, just looking to make a positive influence on people.
