I say we don't retire anyone's number.
I hate how they are comparing all this to Jackie Robinson. None of the players make as big an influence as Jackie. He broke the color barrier and was one of the greatest players to step on the field. That's the reason he's retired league wide.
No one in basketball is even on the same level as Jackie

Maybe LeBron should change his jersey number to 666. The number of the Beast.

What about Gretzky? Is he on the same level? What is the criteria, if any? Not many people argue the statement that Jordan is the greatest of all time. He also transcended his sport by breaking international barriers. The 1992 Dream Team, with Jordan as the central figure of the team, introduced American basketball to the rest of the world.
I guess we'll agree to disagree. I say retire his number. In fact, I just removed the TWO and THREE number keys from my keyboard.

To answer your question, Gretzky is not on the same level as Jackie Robinson either. Hockey is no where near NBA or MLB so i dont really care what happens in that league. Most of the United States actually don't care about hockey.

Lebron and M.J. could only aspire to be half as good as Russell, yes individual achivements are great and all but winning is numero uno and no one did it better. when they get their 11 championships then we can talk about true greatness.
