Oh, I hear you. If a peice with 'B.RANFORD' showed up on a card.... I don't want to think about how much I'd be willing to shell out to get it.
That being said, I seriously hope this is something that never happens.

The whole thought of cutting up the cup bands....not cool...but what about rubs...rub cloth or parchment over the bands to get a contact rubbing with names, and cut them and insert. The card could have the year that particular name was rubbed from...like exactly which rub of the ridiculous times Maurice Richard was on, and his line stats or info from that year...that would be sick...

I could see it going a little more the way the Draft Boards did in the Cup. How about cutting out the names and coach signatures from the line up sheets or cutting up the playoff, final, or winter classic banners! I see all those items selling on NHL auction site (whole not cut up of course). I would also love to see the coaches suit swatches make there way back. (love my Scotty Bowman suit swatch)

Do you think the technology is there to have audio or even video on a hockey card?

It would have to be in a product like the Cup -- I have seen these no name video/music players for around $50 though (made in china) that work fine and are no larger/thicker then the size of a shield/draftboard card so it probably wouldn't be that card to implement ... personally though, not something I would be interested in.
I think more information regarding a given piece of memorabilia and a website database with information regarding the piece would be a step ahead. For example, it would say this jersey was worn by player x in x game on x date. And then the website would list the amount of jerseys that a certain player has cut up and which cards contain pieces of that particular jersey... that would be neat.

I think that is a very cool and doable idea, the next step up from a made-to-order card.
