The "Bring Back ...." Discussion Thread

While it is true that some discontinued product lines were discontinued for a good reason, there's always going to be sets that are no longer produced that have a special place in our hobby hearts. Here's a place for everybody to reminisce about their favourite products that fell under the UD/ITG/Panini/Topps/etc. axe.

Me, I miss UD Black. It's a product that I would never break due to the high-risk/high-reward price point, and it did have some real clunkers for subsets, but wow did it ever have some nice cards in there. Check these out:

Those are undeniably very nice hockey cards. I have been on a bit of a run with this product lately for my Price PC and it's got me wishing that it was still around in some form. Combine it with Ice and you could have one amazing standalone product.

Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Such is the case with MVP. Once Upper Deck started producing OPC with every player in uniform listed, you knew that MVP was not long for the World.

It meant that many more packs of OPC would have to be opened to achieve the set, subset, parallel nightmare that it has become. MVP did not delve into the parallel madness that OPC has become.

As well, the price point. By dropping MVP, Upper Deck could then increase the premium paid per box and per pack making it a higher purchase point than MVP.

    It's all about money.

The 90-91 ProSet were not a bad looking card. Rookies of Jagr and others are quite sharp with the solid team colors forming the backgrounds.

They were a far superior looking card than Score of the same year.

I miss ICE back when it was its own product line and not just inserted into BD and SPX boxes.

Agree with ProSet, I actually thought those cards are nice for a cheap set and I liked their 90-91 design more than Score.

I'm a fan of the 07-08 Black Diamond design where the player sort of sticks out from the card, the depth on the imaging is really nice.

What I like though is this one from Pacific Revolution. I only have one of it with Bryan Berard (found it in one of those $1 Dollarama Prestine Marketing packs that have 15 cards). It's ugly almost in a good way. Most spazziest card I've seen, from the late 90s so typical although they made it into the early 2000s. Picture doesn't really capture the shiny glitter on the card. It's bad almost in a good way.

    1) UD Mask Collection. This product was the only viable competitor to ITG's Between the Pipes and a different take on goaltenders.

    2) Topps Gold Label. They were shiny and are still highly sought after at premium prices in today's marketplace.

    3) Bowman's Best. Same point as with Topps Gold Label, shiny and high in resale. I still have no problem selling Atomic Refractors #/100 for full BV and I would love to see a resurrection by anyone except Panini.

    4) Pacific Trading Card Company. I beg you not to give me the lowdown that Panini owns the Pacific brand names and are doing the same thing because I will stop you right there. What Panini does is take the great products, parallels and insert names of the late Pacific Trading Card Company and turns them into modern, bland dredge. Boring memorabilia, an excessive (and that is being conservative since Upper Deck has some restraint) focus on rookie cards, sticker autographs, and autographs to begin with (Pacific made do with very few autograph cards in their products). Crown Royale was horribly destroyed by Panini (went from a fun 18 pack break to a lowly 4 packs with boring recycled card designs...wow), Titanium is looking like a shadow of its former great self, and I cross my fingers that they do not attempt to "re-invent" any of my other favorites such as Atomic, Omega, Dynagon Ice, and Prism. Now that I mentioned it, it is probably inevitable...the nightmare "Panini announces 2012-13 Panini Atomic, Panini Dynagon Ice, Panini Omega, and Panini Prism".

Revolution, Dynagon, and Invincible from 1997-98 are gorgeous cards with amazing Parallels and unique inserts, al very innovative.

Three of the better sets ever produced.
