I guess I need to go through my old scans. At one time, I owned three of the five copies and was working on a deal for a fourth. Judging by the amount of e-mails that I received, I'm guessing his "early end" had more to do with ebay stepping-in, then a late act of honesty on the part of the seller.
I guess if you are around long enough, you see everything. Back in the day, scammers would at least wait a week or so after your auction ended, before they'd try this.

You're not too far off. As I mentioned, at one point, I owned three copies of the card and was working on a deal for the fourth. Of the four copies that I have seen, the current one that I have posted, is the only one which features a multi-colored Ovechkin - part of a star from around the emblem. The other three copies, all feature an Ovechkin swatch with a solid "white" piece, that is either from the fight strap or a sock.
Anyone (new) can screw-up like this but if you look at his feedback, it seems as though there was an "issue" with a Crosby sale, that "didn't" go through?

I really pity for those buyers who fell into traps with allt hose false auctions...
Hope that I'll never get scammed, but unfortunately I got totally scammed at 2003...
But I was young and naive then....but ebay wasn't safe then like now....
I would be really shocked if I got a card who isn't like as pictured at the auction!

Where there is a will there is a way. Its not as hard as you think. But I won't give a lesson on how to do it on here. Some things are better left unsaid.
(DISCLAIMER) I HAVE NEVER, AND WOULD NEVER SCAM ANYONE!!! I JUST KNOW HOW ITS DONE SO I CAN PROTECT MYSELF!

Sadly, every scammer will say the same thing. When it happened to me they said their camera and phone were both broken, and they didn't know anyone with either or a scanner to put up a photo.
After I told him how stupid that made him sound, he vowed in a week he'd list it and prove me wrong. Since then? About a year has passed, no card, seller no longer even has an account.
I would report it to eBay, make them remove it, then watch the seller...if he does it again, eBay will shut down his account.

Sadly, he or she most likely will.
When it happened to me, I told the seller that eBay would be phoning his local law enforcement for fraud and theft haha. Obviously that would never happen, but the seller got pretty defensive and apologetic, so we just need to think of some scare tactics to make these people stop doing it.
Thankfully we have a good community of boards that reports this type of stuff.
