Just so we're all celar. Everyone knows that there is/estimate 8 people who make this ruling. Shanahan is just one of many who made the call in (couch couch) 25 games.

25? WOW - I saw a nice suspension coming but 25? really? I have seen so many worse hits than that one....
BTW - here is a list of the suspensions in this playoffs year.....so far....one of the worst?
Player Team Date Suspension
Raffi Torres PHX 04/21/2012 25 games for late hit to the head (they forgot to add the 3rd infraction....charging)
Nicklas Backstrom WSH 04/17/2012 1 game for cross-checking
Arron Asham PIT 04/17/2012 4 games for cross-checking
James Neal PIT 04/17/2012 1 game for charging
Andrew Shaw CHI 04/17/2012 3 games for charging
Matt Carkner OTT 04/15/2012 1 game for fighting

The NHL is an absolute joke and disgrace! 25 games for a hit that is worth 5 games based on precedent and at max 10 games based on Torres history! They are using Torres as a scapegoat player to set a new precedent which is wrong. They need to have consistency. Torres is an easy player to suspend but if a star player with a history like Ovechkin made the same hit would the league really suspend him for 25 games for a hit that is borderline illegal? NO WAY!

I think that they are trying to send a strong message. In order for this kind of behaviour to be eliminated, strong messages need to be sent.
Personally, I think the best message would have been to toss him out of the league.
This is his fourth suspension if I haven't lost count. The league definitely would continue to exist without Raffi Torres.
I fact, I love it that you think THIS makes the league a joke. The reason why the league is becoming a joke, is because any other sports league would have thrown him out 2 suspensions ago.
The fact that the NHL continues to give players like this chance after chance...THAT is the real joke.

My problem isn't that Torres got a 25 game suspension. My problem is the lack of consistency with suspensions. If Joe Thornton only got 2 games for his dangerous hit that took out Perron then Torres definitely didn't deserve 25 games. I thought the Keith hit on Sedin was worse but he only got 5 games. Chara didn't even get suspended for his hit on Max that took him out on a stretcher.
I have to agree with CSSports in that I thought the suspension would be long but no where near 25 games since I have seen so many worse hits as well which did not receive suspensions or received 5 games or less.

The suspension is not based entirely on the hit, it is based primarily on Torres' history. Like when a criminal is out on probation and commits another crime. If someone with a clean record robs a liquor store, they may go to jail for 3-5 years, but a convicted felon on probation would go to jail for 10-15.
Torres is not the same as Thornton, because he has a HISTORY of this kind of behaviour.

Torres had two previous suspensions within the past 12 months. This now makes makes it the top suspension in games that includes playoff games, as Dale Hunter was the next one at 21 games.
I recalled a game earlier in his career when he was with the Oilers and he killed any chance of a comeback in that game by taking a boarding major with about five minutes left in the game. This was I believe the last game of the season and it officially eliminated them from the playoffs. This shows he has done these sort of things before.
The other note about that specific game that I recall was Ty Conklin was the starter in that game and MacTavish was coaching them at the time.
Gotta note that Shannahan is definitely trying to send a message with the suspensions in the playoffs. Colin Campbell was too meek to do those sort of suspensions for most part, as he rarely suspended players in the playoffs for more than one game. This did not include his nepotism to help his son out.

If this is the case, then they're not trying to take these (or any other) acts out of the game, just out of Torres.

What it comes down to is this: There are 8 very smart, very well paid individuals in a room who put alot of thought into decisions like these.
We can sit here on a hockey forum complaining about it, but the fact is, those people in the room were put into that room because of the knowledge and experience that they have in dealing with these kinds of matters.
If we were capable of making better decisions, then surely we would have better things to do than complain about said decisions on a hockey forum.
