The hobby changed but it's far from being dead. Sure, there is far less trading than before, but people are buying. With group breaks, I added many nice Canadiens cards to my collection too :)

Interesting reading thru this. IMO the hobby is not dead, obviously people still trade, and people still buy packs/boxes. I will say the value of the products is declining rapidly, an that IMO is a bad thing. As people have mentioned, unless you buy the product that just came out yesterday, and happen to hit a top rookie and flip it quickly, you will get crushed about 85% of the time. I've been on here on and off for a few years now, and while there are some of the same faces I saw in 08-09, many are long gone.
The stuff I collect, high end Martin Brodeur, I noticed has little value anymore. I don't mind it, I can buy cards I used to pay hundreds for, for fractions of the price, put it is concerning. I know full well most of what I am collecting may one day be worth the same as all those beanie babies from the mid 90's. It's a shame. But it is 100% the result of the card companies fully exploiting anything that appears to be a hit, ransacking, and glutting the market til the point of saturation. Jersey cards were big in the late 90's, now they are common. Then auto's, then shield's, and so on. Just how the cycle works, until eventually everything loses value except for old school vintage. When I first got back into things in 07, Brodeur Autos ran about $100. His Cup base was regularly selling for $25. Now you can get a Cup auto for $30.
This essentially is it for me. I view it the same as I view buying tickets to the hockey games. It is fun, a great experience, and ultimately, once the money leaves my pocket, likely never coming back. Some people have a problem spending their hard earned money on something that at best will only decline rapidly in value. Some it seems from reading the responses here, do not. Matter of opinion I guess. But I certainly wouldnt say things are healthy.

It is worth noting that right now in basketball 90's inserts are shooting up to absolutely crazy values. So it is possible that those VHTF Brodeurs you have could see the same type of rise in their future. But just because one sport has a trend doesn't mean it goes across other sports. But you never know.

We really to stop blaming card companies for producing what the market demands. Most hobbies are not intended to be profitable, in fact most will cost money for the sheer enjoyment of participating. No, the hobby isn't dead, not by any stretch, but it can be expensive if you allow it. Keep it simple and learn to enjoy cards without digging too deep into your pocket. I can live without ever owning a CUP ARP, a Young Gun is fine by me.

Lot of schilling involved in jordan and 90's stuff..
I cant even give away two hertl YG'S for $5...
Galchenyuk $10 and he's hot...
Most cup rc's selling low unless sick patch and it just came out.
Guys giving away gretzky blue pmg's for $10 at shows...
Star player die cut auto from spa...can't even sell for $5...yet people will spend $500 on boxes to get those hits...
