Steve Mason's hobby potential
Just wondering what everyone thinks about Steve Mason's hobby potential. I have started a PC for him and a few of his teammates but concentrating right now on him. The reason im doing this is I trully think he is the next great goalie (along the line of brodeur and roy) and his team is nodout headed to the cup and will probably win in the next couple of yrs. I think his team has the best chance in the future, just as long as they dont get hit with the same problems that montreal had this yr. (WE all know abou those dont we Mr PRICE and the brothers). Anyway woudl love to hear what you all think.

I think that the Mason craze has peaked; with the Jackets out of the playoffs people are largely focusing on Varlamov and Hiller for the time being. If he's able to follow up his excellent rookie campaign with an equally strong sophomore season, hey, I'm all for being proven wrong. But right now, if you were to ask me if he'll stay hot, my answer would be no.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

I agree
I agree. I hope he has an equally strong sophomore yr. But what I really wana know is what you all think his long term potential is.

It really depends on how well that team can do.
I think, for the short term (2-3 years) his value is at it's peak. Maybe a bit more if he wins the Vezina.... but I don't think a Calder win will do anything to boost his value.
In 3 or 4 years, I could very well see the Blue Jackets contending for the Cup (maybe even sooner than that?) and if they can win several.... he very well could become a highly sought after player.
I think that's what it will take though. Even winning a Stanley Cup plus a Conn Smythe trophy.... it didn't exactly ignite the demand for Cam Ward (aside for a few months). If Mason's cards are to get on par with Brodeur or Roy.... he's going to have to have a Brodeur-or-Roy-like-career. If he's the next big thing in net, he'll do well (value wise) anywhere. If he's anything less than the best goalie of a generation.... he'll get very little hobby love playing in Columbus.

True. But I can't see his prices droping to much. If he has anouther good yr and stays out of trouble unlike Price) His cards shoudl at least stay level or maybe just a little below. He's ten time beter then price and prices card didnt drop to much even after his lousy performance. Mind you he's in montreal not columbus.Last edited by RGM81; 05-11-2009 at 04:03 PM. At the moment in the last years to now this is the more underated rookie goalie in what his cards worth.
RGM81 SAY: ''But right now, if you were to ask me if he'll stay hot, my answer would be no.''
If you think or have doubts like this guy please do it for me STOP collect Steve Mason because you know nothing about hockey....
First we know he has talent no rookie goalie of 20 years old did what he did with a team like Columbus...Please buy the more as you can i guarenteed you he is the next Luongo and his cards will be rare like Crosby cards.

agree
I totally agree and its good to see im not the only one who thinks so. This kid is just amasing. I hope he dont mess up like price. But if he does Im sure he'll be able to shake it off and then come back the following yr and kick butt yet again.

Oh please. I've seen enough of Mason to agree with you, to a certain point. I do think this guy is the real deal.... but he is still far from being the sure-shot superstar you seem to think he is.
Will he stay hot, in the hobby? The answer is probably no. Next year, he won't be a rookie.... so collectors will have changed their focus to the 09-10 crop of rookies (this happens every year) and playing in Columbus will work against his value. Yes.... if the Blue Jackets get off to a 20-2 start, where Mason is playing unbelieve hockey.... the prices will stay high, but without the benefit of playing in one of the big markets, his prices are likely going to drop.
And over the long term..... like I said before.... if anyone is hoping for Brodeur like prices for his GU and Auto cards... you better be planning on a Brodeur like career. That's the only way it will happen, as long as he's in Columbus.

His rookie cards will still be hot I think, but next year's issues won't be IMO. Also, I think he will spike again when he wins the Calder. ;-)
