I've lived in the philly area my whole life. This is another example of "win now or we're screwed" thinking that seems to dominate this area. I guess if you haven't won a cup since 74, a nba title in 20+ years (I think) and no super bowl, you get a bit edgy.
It's not really a horrible trade, Pronger will bring a solid 2-way veteran defenseman and I will agree that as of right now Philly has the best defense in the eastern conferance. They better, because the goaltender behind that defense is.... this should be an interesting season.
Hypothetically you have a championship team. Amazing defense, really deep offensive threats (no major threat really, but alot of talented scorers who can get the job done), and a goaltender who may or may not be a really great idea.
Either this is going to be a banner year for philly and all of the parts they've assembled will gel together and bring the cup back to broad street. Or their risky goaltender and win now or die philosophy will end with being kicked out of the playoffs by the penguins.
Five bucks says Crosby is hoisting the cup again next year and Philly spends another season trying to figure out what piece is missing this time.

Before the 2010 season even starts I think that piece you are talking about is Emery. I just don't see him being that good? It will take him half a season just to used to being back in the NHL.
Having said that, maybe Briere is moving for a goalie, and Emery is the backup? That would remove the cap space.
Atl?

Lethonen is an RFA this season and with Pavelec probably ready to go, that would be intriguing. I can't see Les Thrash doing this, but it is intriguing none the less

We def overpaid. The reason we signed Emery was because he was cheap, but the money we saved on signing him instead of Biron is spent on Pronger. I like Pronger and think he is a perfect fit for this city/team. I just think we shouldve kept Sbisa (or at least got more than Dingle on the side).

haha, philly didn't get raped.
People who don't watch Lupol play daily don't realize how bad he is. Lupol is actually terrible. He played with good linemates this year, but anyone who knows hockey and watches every game sees how poor he is on both sides of the ice. Why do you think in his short career he's been moved so much?
Thats my first point. My second point is luca sbisa is a great player, but will have tough breaking into our lineup even without Pronger.
My next point is any player we picked this year at the #21 spot would need 2-3 years before making it to the NHL.
My next point is that we don't need next years draft pick to win the cup this year.
While Emery may not be the greatest goalie, all an AVERAGE goalie needs is a strong team in front of them. Look at Giguere. He is by no means an outstanding goalie. He is mediocre at best. You put a great defense and team methodology infront of him and it works out.
My next point - this makes room for Giroux on the second or even first line. This kid if he played all 2009 would of been up in points with Bobby Ryan, he is a complete stud.
The Flyers no doubt have the est Defense in all of the East next season with this move. IF emery stops the basic shots and gets the couple acrobatic saves that he can make, then our strong defense will take care of the rest.
I'm actually laughign that so many people are doubting this trade. We are giving up three players that won't play on the team for 2-4 years minimum, and a lazy forward who has no work ethic and is a waste of money. Pronger fits perfect in the Philly culture, and HE is the one type of d-man that we've been missing. A big strong mean hitter who has a shot and can move the puck well.
This is the perfect move for the Flyers as plan B to Jay Bouw. I'm thrilled and completely excited.

I agree with you. Sbisa's going to be a stud in a couple years. He might be the piece we miss most, but if Pronger works out, we will probably try to sign him for an extension after this year.
I really believe the Flyers will get to at least the Conference finals this year.
