Really nice gesture of Lebron, and I really hope the NBA does retire MJ's number across the league, because I just don't think there's a more influential player then Michael Jordan.
On top that, I think MJ is more universally liked and accepted then other players. What i mean is, yeah, the NBA could also retire Russell’s, Magic, and Birds numbers as well, but you can't seriously think that Lakers fans and the Lakers organization will want to participate in retiring Russell’s and Birds numbers, and have them next to our Lakers jerseys. The same goes with the Celtics organization and fans, i doubt they would want to retire Magic's number. That's why Jordan's number will be perfect, because he doesn't conflict with any organization like those other three players.Last edited by jeebus86; 11-22-2009 at 11:13 AM.

Thing is, there have been some great #33's in Lakers history, and some great #32's in Celtics history...and, personally, if you are a true fan of the sport, you wouldn't have an objection to the league retiring one of the greatest player's jersey number.
BTW - you is general; not you personally
Oh, and the Bulls may not have a rival team, like the Lakers/Celtics rivalry, but I would bet you that there would be a few teams that would be less than thrilled to retire #23 - Blazers, Jazz and Pistons are the three that come to mind.

The Knicks too.. they always got beat by the Jordan's Bulls! And to some extent the Pacers also... I don't think these other team would like to retire Jordan's number.

Could probably make a case for every team in the league...lol...I thought about the Pacers, but Reggie and Jordan seemed to be friendly with each other, so I don't think there was any (or much) bad blood between the teams...but the Knicks, yeah, I would agree. The Magic could be another one, as they made the finals when Jordan retired...then he came back, and the Magic did what? Oh yeah...went home early.

If you're referring to Bill Russell with that statment, my answer is still no, I don't want his jersey number next to Wilt, because it's like a slap in the face not only to Wilt, but to Jerry, Elgin, and Gail. and don't try to use this whole "true fan" argument, because I could care less. The fact is, I'm a Laker fan before I'm a basketball fan, and I don't want his jersey in our house, and I'm sure other Laker fans would agree.
And Bill Russell was great, i'll give him that, but he wasn't as influential as Michael Jordan was. Michael Jordan made this sport famous worldwide, Bill Russell only made the sport famous in Boston.

I'm referring to any of them...not specifically Russell. How would it be a slap in the face to the Lakers of that era? I'm sure they respected him as a player, and wouldn't have a problem seeing some recognition for one of the greatest players in NBA history.
As for Russell not being influential to the sport as a whole, I have to disagree - without Russell (and Wilt, for that matter), the NBA may've never taken off...and there may not have ever been a Jordan, or a Kobe, or KG...they were the first stepping stones to what the league is today.
