Niemi is a rookie but can not win the Calder. It's called the Makorov rule. You have to be younger than 26 before September 15th of your rookie year.

Thanks for the info :) I did not know that. If he was younger, I think that he would be in the top 3.

I'd say either Myers or Duchene wins, but don't count out my boy JVR!!!! I have a feeling he'll play pretty solidly for the rest of the year! GO FLYERS!!!!
l collect Philadelphia Eagles (NO VICK CARDS), Philadelphia Flyers, Philadelphia Phillies, Detroit Pistons, Detroit Tigers.

If Niemi is 26, he's for sure out. The Sergie Makarov rule says you have to be 25 or under.
EDIT - lol. I should have read the rest of the thread. You already made the comment.
For anyone who does't know - Makarov won the Calder in 1990, as a 32 year old rookie. NHL made a rule change after that...... you've got to be 25 or under.

Seems ridiculous that you have to put in a rule that rookie of year canidate needs to be younger then 26 lol... Why do none of the other sports have such a rule? Just my opinion alot of players dont develop until around that age anyway..

Which is why after being hyped non-stop for two years by the NHL as the second coming of Wayne Gretzky, Sidney Crosby won the Cald....d'oh! If the numbers are there for Myers or Duchene that put either of them significantly above Tavares, they will win it. They can only coddle so much, and it would be an outrage if, say, Duchene goes on to pop 30 goals and Tavares hits a slump and freezes at 20 yet still wins.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

Those 2 bolded statements are pretty much my EXACT feelings
I'm so glad Sid didn't win the Calder...still wish Ovie would get more credit than little Crosby..
BUT lets not get into that.
I didn't know about the 26 yr old rule, thats interesting...I really don't think Niemi would have had a shot anyways, I mean he's playing good and everything, but not that often, and as said, he has I believe the best defensive team in the NHL currently in front of him

The NHL had a much different problem in the 1990s, one that only MLB might also share....
You had a ton of European talent coming into the league that was previously not allowed (the whole fall of communism thing). Russian players in particular were coming into the NHL, after playing & dominating World Championships / Olympics / Russian Super League for the better part of a decade. These guys were NHL rookies, and never really play 'Pro' so they were eligible.
Like I said in an earlier post, Sergei Makarov was 32 when he won Rookie of the Year, so they changed the rules to stop that from happening again (though I don't think there has been a time since when it really came into play).
Going back to the MLB example - I know Hideki Matsui didn't win the AL Rookie of the Year (lost a really close vote, can't remeber to who) but does it make sense to call a guy a 'Rookie' after he's played 9 years of Pro baseball in Japan?

Howard is still considered a Rookie? Hasnt he been up and down for the last 4 years? He should fall in the Jamie Storr Rule....
I havent seen Myers play much but highlights.....but from what I have seen, I would say he has it due to playing a harder position (as many have mentioned earlier). If he can hang with Duchene and Tavares #s, he has to win......
odds are against Myers though.......5 D won in last 30 years
