What's the problem with base cards??!!
I know we all like our autos, rookies, game used, #'d cards etc...
But it's like people DON'T want base cards.
I don't mind them. I think some of them are nice.
Lets kinda go over the fundamentals of a base card. Obviously we all know what a base card is, but I think we overlook what they mean.
Every set has base cards right? You know the cards that most of us pass over to look for the hit in the pack if their is one...
So what is it? Really?
Well it's still a "card", and I think many of us look at them as "junk" or a casualty to our packs/boxes.
It's a picture of a current player usually.. the picture is in color, and on the picture it's usually a photograph of a in game shot.
On the back, we get vital stats, which might be height/weight/draft year/birthday etc.
Stats, my favorite part, some cards do just the last year, with a career total up to that date, and some do an entire total of stats, year by year with career totals to that period of time.
And you get a little paragraph sometimes about that player.
I think we overlook base cards, I do sometimes, but they are still cards.
They are worth money... and they can be valuable in years time.
The next time I bust some packs, I'm going to take a blessing and pride in my base cards. They are there for joy, and to collect
Lets all remember that.

I view them as something to put in a box for the children's hospital.
Habs fan and collector! Current PC's: Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Lane Hutson...., and of course...

really? lol
I guess that's one way to look at it.
I just think there's a underrated thought process that goes into them.

Base cards are great if it's a set I'm collecting or a player / team I like. I keep most if not all of my Canucks cards seperate from the rest of my base and my player PCs will never ever be finished if I don't add in the base.

I donate them to kids who I know love hockey. Kids are the future of our hobby and a common Sidney Crosby or Alexander Ovechkin have little value to most of us. Now a ten year child cherishes it the same way that we charish a nice auto or game used pull.

I completely agree with robcynd....base cards became very underrated...I think, psychologically it might have to do something with them being called BASE (something not special, something you can always have without having to put effort into it=people dont cherish what they are used to as long as it it around)...I personally usually bust products where I like the base cards for the following reasons: 1) I dont get angry if I dont hit 2) I dont just surf through base cards to look for the hit. I carefully look at every card, as I like the design, which gives me a longer joy in busting packs=more fun for your money (When i see people on youtube bust a case of SPA in 3.5 minutes im thinking "what the heck?") 3) If i like the design, I am likely to try the base set as long as it looks good in an album...these days it is very easy with some products (I managed the whole base set of 09-10 spa from just one box...and it looks great) It sucks that people view base as rubbish...If I didnt like base I would never take the risk of busting a pack! You would be better of just watch for steals on ebay...howgh

couldn't have been said better ^^^^^^
I loved the 09-10 SPA base set, looks great. I like the champs too.
Base cards have value, and they are neat to have. I for the most part look at each one, but I don't cherish it sometimes.
I'm going to start doing this more.

I like base cards, I keep all of the base of our player PC's, but I rarely build a base set unless I really like the design, I do however love to try and build the parallel sets as it gives me a challenge and more of a sense of accomplishment if I complete the set. Just my .02 cents

I really only open boxes of things I like the base set of, and then try to finish it. I'm really picky with the stuff in my player PC, so I usually skip out on base cards. But my set building... well my complete Champs base and Green parallel set look pretty nice side by side in a binder :)

I'm all about the base cards. In addition to my players, I do base sets as well, and I don't ignore them. You get stats, and sometimes a bio that can be interesting. Of course I collect every card of my players, and that includes base.
The funny thing here is that base sets can also be a challenge to put together. This being because very few people hang onto them, or send them into their closets, or as Rich said give them away as donations. So ultimately some base sets can be a bit of fun hunting, and tracking cards down to finish them.Searching for: Jagr, Palffy, Stumpel, and Boyd
