wow thank you... it's nice to know that I'm not the only one thinking this...

I have a stupid 97-98 UD of pat lafontaine, it's one of my fav cards...

who cares how much it's worth?

thats exactly what i mean...in what i consider to be my 4 cornerstone pieces rests a Rob Ray patch card from Private Stock, and a Nabokov Jersey/Pad/Glove card #'ed to 35...the nabby only is "valued" at $30 but idc...not nearly my most pricey card...but its my first major pull when i was a kid...and Rob Ray was my fav. player growing up..if i listed it on ebay i would be lucky to get 1.00 for it...but idc lol its a classic to me
Please check my inventory before my photobucket!!! It's more up to date!!!

When the hobby was more about the enjoyment and thrill of the chase, you had trades of all kind going on. When it started being akin to "the lottery", getting those HUGE pulls, it attracted the casual fan who didn't care about hockey cards so much as being able to brag to his friends how he scored some big cash on some card.

I'm a Player Collector, so I want it all -- low end, high end and everything in between!

I collect Fowler because i enjoy him and watching him play. He's one of my favourite players and i know his cards wont be 100's of dollars in the future but i do it for fun. Yes, i can be nice to pull that one super card here and there but lets take crosby as an example. You pay hundreds upon hundreds of dollars for his cards and what if one day he gets hit and it ends his career. The people who collect him loose all those hundreds of dollars. Yes, im not going to lie it can be nice when your player plays good and his cards goes up in value but when you do it just for the money the hobby isn't fun. This hobby is for the enjoyment of it.

I do all kinds of low end stuff, cause cards are just plain fun. Collector's nowadays would rather have a patch of a player that's been in the league for 10 plus years, than his Rookie Card.

    Never understand that one.

I'm getting a little frustrated with that fact I have over 500 cards in my bucket and only the Brodeur stick and Duchene YG get any attention whatsoever. I realize those are my best cards and I don't have anything else that's super special, but I get an offer on each of those about 3 times a week. Getting those offers doesn't bother me as much as the fact that nobody can use a single other card I have.

You and I did a Trade, you've got some great cards. Some collectors on here are in year 5 of collecting, herein lies the problem.

They have NO time for anything before Sid, Ovy, and Malkin.

It is pretty frustrating when people are only looking for the next "big thing". I love trading for 90s base/inserts of Patrick Roy, they're some of my favorite cards even if they aren't considered valuable. If anyone has any FT let me know!

Honestly, and I don't mean to be rude, but maybe you're just not looking hard enough for the right trading partners.

Sure, I agree with you that there are a lot of bad apples on here that won't trade unless it's "worth the postage" and won't help you out with some cards unless you have a "must have" item for their PC.

    BUT

I've only been here 4 months and I've got close to 60 trades completed with another 10 in progress. Only 3 or 4 of my trades have involved high end cards. I would say the rest are split about 50/50 between mid-end (I'd call $20-$75 BV) and low-end (under $20 BV) trades. I've done a lot of base trades for set completion and minor insert trades to get stuff for my PC's (I collect EVERYTHING of my main PC guys). I've even done small trades for no other reason than to "knock off" a needed trade for contest purposes. Postage doesn't matter to me if the trade is small. $2 to $3 to help someone out is nothing. Maybe I just won't have a 3rd coffee that day to make up for it, lol. I've even went so far as to offer to send a postage paid bubble mailer to the other trader myself just so they'll send me the 1-2 minor items I need. Unfortunately they've never taken me up on the offer (at that point you're no longer a bad apple you're a rotten apple).

As for high end stuff, I don't even care about it for the most part. I have very little of it, even amongst my PC collections, because I usually sell the stuff off so I can put the money towards other things I enjoy such as video games, electronics, home furnishings, etc.
