My Red Paperclip Experiment
Hi everyone,
I thought that it would be interesting to try a red paper clip experiment on SCF.
I'm not sure if it's been done before but I thought it would be fun and I could document the process.
Basically what the experiment entails is constantly trading an item for a new item and constantly working up to bigger item. It's called the red paper clip experiment because there was a man who was able to start with just a paperclip and trade it all the way up to a house!
Now I'm not looking for charity trades. The card I'm starting with is pretty high end so I'm not trying to rip anyone off (it might also be fun doing a low-end version of this as well but maybe I'll try that next week). Also, I'd be more than happy to add extra cards or cash to create bigger trades.
So the story begins with me at the card show in Toronto. I had just made a deal to move 170 jerseys rookies and inserts for about 200 bucks.
As I was browsing, I came across my first card for a price of only 15 dollars! So in essence, my first deal was trading 12 jerseys and inserts for that shattenkirk! The rest is history!
Anyways,
the card I'm starting with is this:

It's in the highend trading list now. If you want it feel free to make an offer and we will see where this goes!
Update:
The first trade was made!
I traded the above Shattenkirk+ a shattenkirk yg and expo insert
to get:

Update
Hey everyone!
So I just got traded that Malkin (plus about $10 in trade value for another trade that we made) to get this:

Not to shabby eh?
I will keep this thread updated to watch the adventure.
update!!!
I made a huge three way deal involving myself, a trader here and my local card shop to get:

I traded the ovy and 10 dollars to get this duchene fwa patch rc! It's sick! I just have to go pick it up when I get back in town and the next deals will start!
UPDATE
I made another huge trade yesterday with my buddy Don (KrazyKanuck) and traded the Duchene 1-1 for this baby here:

I think it's a really nice card and you'll be seeing it soon for trade :)
UPDATE
So I took that Seguin and traded it (which is sad because I really liked it but the show must go on) for a very nice lot of Rookies.
For the Seguin I got:
Hall SPX
Tavares SPX
Tavares SPA
Duchene Utlimate RC /99
Subban YG

UPDATE
THis gets a bit confusing but I traded the Tavares spx and hall spx to get this James Reimer CUP auto rc:

Tavares spa
Duchene ultimate
Reimer the cup
Subban young guns
I'm looking to trade them all for one card!
UPDATE
I traded the duchene ultimate, Reimer and subban young guns for:

I love it!!
UPDATE
I traded away my Tavares CUP /91 Rookie for:
Tavares ICE /99 and Evander Kane Ice /99

Now I've gotten a Tavares Ice, Tavares SPA and Evander Kane Ice out of my Shattenkirk. In the words of Don (krazykanuck1), GIDDY UP!
Thanks for watching and hopefully I'll be able to make a trade with some of you:)

What are you trying to trade up to?
I have seen this a couple of time and the most successful I have seen was attempted with a 52 Mantle as the goal. The project has stalled a couple of times if I recall correctly. The hard part will be finding a way to infuse value into the trades without "charity".
Here is a link to the mantle project:

Good luck with your quest!

Youre absolutely right about the charity thing. You really have to find people who want the Card you have and add little extras to make it worth it.

To avoid the charity aspect, and have it be a real red paper clip type thing, I think you need to not tell people the card is part of the experiment. Document your progress and report periodically, but don't advertise "Red Paper Clip" card for trade.

That's true to a degree as well but I feel that the traders here know when I write that I don't want charity that the deal will be pretty square. So far nobody has tried to make a charity trade so I think we are okay. After reading up on the experiment, I think most of the charity occurs when you start really low end. That's why I decided to be more fair and start with a high end.

So the red paper clip thing is going from like a 10.00 card then trading it etc. and keep trading these new cards for something huge like the Mantle?

Yeah. The first trade I made was at the Toronto Card Show. It was a lot of small jerseys for the Shattenkirk and then I brought the Shattenkirk here to be moved further.
