I hear ya - I started out wanting to collect all of Luc's card (this being my first and only goal)....I have them all displayed in Binders and enjoy looking/reading them....Its more than numbers and value....its almost a review of his career....Start to finish....I actually like the base cards as well....to see 20+ years of photography on a card is pretty amazing.....
Collecting should be about what YOU want to collect....I chose to collect all of Luc's cards....
BTW - I enjoyed checking out your Lidstrom PC - Some Awesome cards in there.....

See I disagree, set a goal, the enjoyment comes in completion. You evidently have figured out what is out there in terms of Robitaille, so figure out whats achievable.
I collect Olaf Kolzig, much more cards than Ranford, probably about the same as Robitaille. I narrowed my collection to everything through 2007-08 and the card must picture and list him as a Washington Capitals, hence the year cutoff (08-09 stuff list him with Tampa though show him in a Caps jersey). I also limited the scope to major manufacturers, and items /26 or higher. This allows me to reasonably achieve my goal of all 1047 cards. I have amassed 662 individual cards of that 1047. I will before the end of time get them all, because Ive set a level and are capable of achieving it.
By worrying about 1/1s and the /5 cards of Robitaille with Gretzky, for a low level collector youve priced yourself right out of ever achieving an end game. Not saying dont pick those cards up when you can, I personally have a few Kolzig patches and what not /10 or so. But the end game comes with every card /26 or higher, and just imagine when Im done I can say I have one of only 26 possible Kolzig collection POSSIBLE on the planet.
Just my two cents.

I stopped setting a # goal on my player PCs. Once the 1/1s started coming out that killed my dream of getting close to 100% on LaFontaine. I just keep searching and pickup what I can. Now that I started Tavares this season forget about keeping up. He's at 428 already.
LaFontaine have 659 of 795 about 83%
Okposo have 129 of 262 close to 50%
Tavares have 46 of 428 :(

Is the 1851 his total amount of cards? If so you are luckier than me. Sundin has around 4000 cards produced. I just get what I can and not sweat what I can't get.

With Steen the 1/1 craze is ridiculous. He has 413 different non 1/1 cards and over 100 1/1's. My original goal started to just collect my favorite player. After awhile i decided to get as many as I could of cards /25 or more. Then i had a couple of collectors decide that they didnt want their collection as much as before and were willing to move several low numbered pieces.
He has 66 cards numbered out of 2-10. At the point that the other collectors contacted me i had about 10 of them. I now (with thier help) have 48 of them. I am now over 90% of the 413 (with the 3 i have incoming) and have 10 1/1's. I am going to keep collecting until maybe one day i have them all but in all honesty it probably wont happen. He has 5 autos /15 or less where he is pictured with OV and they are from his rookie year. Not to mention the octo jersey with crosby /3.
Anyways my advice is just to have fun because there are so many cards you can grab right now. The bad thing about a collection nearing completion is there is not much stuff to chase and it comes up very rarely which slows down your trading. It is very rewarding to find one of these cards but it still is bittersweet because i do that so rarely.

Honnestly it is cool math that you've done I love it. Every PC is unique and defines you in a way of collecting. I would hate to be like a lot of guys saying I collect Crosby and Ovechkin, I love your choice of PC (Luc Robitaille) it's different at least and not everybody on the planet is looking for the same cards as you unlike those Crosby and Ovechkin collectors. Don't get me wrong Crosby and Ovie are awesome players and there is awesome cards of them that I would like to own, but it's just too common. Don't scratch your head too hard on percentage of completion, you'll go bald before you get all Robitaille. But like most people said 1/1 killed the dream for many of us. I still run some crazy PC and I love to own more than 1 card of a print run, for some example I have 10 copy of one cards that the print run is 25. Anyways internet as helped many of us and especially sites like this one.
Cheers

I have same kind of situation with my Gilmour collection.. That's why I don't respect any card companys anymore. To tell the thuth I hate UD. ITG done some big mistake's too specially with those 1/1 cards.
ITG 08-09 Superlative (Toronto) set: There's about 40-50 high eng Gilmour card and also 1/1 versions too.. Just ONE SET!!
I fight against windmills every day.. it's not funny at all.
Why they destroyed all older players collections? Guys are retired years ago.
Sorry bout my rusty English, hope you get my point anyway.

well, easiest way for collecting a player just hunt all the non 1/1 stuff first, once yuo get that complete or almost then start trying to track down the bigger guns. My Robbie Earl project is coming along nicely and if i see a 1/1 plate or something, i'll grab it if i can, if not no biggie, as i would much rather track down the rest of the cards first. 41% of someones cards being 1/1 is hands down rediculous and a little much
