    Has ebay hurt collecting?

Or is Beckett now considered useless? I got a 1965 Topps Carl Yas. card that, at the time, had a BV from Beckett of $65 and I got it for just under $10. I have noticed since I have just been browsing different forums that everyone wants to trade BV for BV but when it comes to paying for a card, they would rather pay ebay value. Why is this? Has Beckett, and other card value magazines, become a thing of the past or is ebay really wrecking havoc on the value of cards?

i actualy think ebay is helping it more.

my reason, im actualy buying more cards now than i did 10 years ago.

with 60 bucks i could get 2 or 3 if im lucky that are BV at 60 than going to a card shop and buying 1.

    i like it.

So does Beckett need to be around any more? Why do people insist on trading BV for BV?

As to your first post and questions, generally speaking yes, people will trade by beckett value and buy based on sell values off ebay. Beckett has no relevance when it comes to sell values, but it's useful when trading for cards that book $60 or less.

I just don't get it though. If ebay makes it cheaper for people to buy cards, why does Beckett put high BV on the cards? This is just one thing that plagues me. Don't get me wrong, I would trade BV for BV to get a card I want but it just doesn't seem to make sense.

Beckett is flawed, heavily. However when you trade book value to BV you are comparing apples to apples, no matter how rotten. Both cards are priced inaccurately so two wrongs make a right (?).

Trading Sale Value (SV) to SV doesn't work that well bc one week it sells for this another it sells for that, this auction ended at this time with a crummy seller, and so on.

This is just like the Nielsen ratings for TV viewership. Is it inaccurate, absolutely, but it is the only thing out there and everyone has to work under the flawed system.

IMO ebay has both helped and hurt the card collecting business. Ebay helps because it gives the buyers more options at buying cards. Before E-bay your option for purchasing cards were shows, LCS or trading with Friends. With Ebay a buyer has options at finding cards to finish a set or even start a PC of a particular player or team. I’ve noticed the price of vintage cards is very cheap now compared to a few years ago. Ebay has hurt the market in selling cards – with numerous people selling the same cards it drives down the price.

I’m sure you’ll see many different opinions on this…but mostly a buyer of cards I’ve found e-bay has helped me.

Because Ebay is a single source for sales and is not a true reflection of market values as many delusional people feel it is, Beckett takes its averages from thousands of sources and comes up with a fairly accurate market average. on ebay a card could sell for $100 one day and 5 the next. card values should never be taken from such a volitile market and as bad as beckett is people often forget it is just a guide and only a guide what sells cheap one place can demand a premium elsewhere.....

    Seattle Seahawks

Ebay is a god-sent for me.. I collect Seahawks and its been impossible to find members with hi-end/great hawks cards. Yet Ebay has 100s each month. I dont live in WASHINGTON so any local card shop I have been to in 5 different states in the last 15 years also never have any Seahawks..imo LCS are worthless except for boxes and supplies... they have no new info that you cant read off the internet and you can meet new traders in your area on the net aswell... Hate to see the LCS fade away but when they charge $10 for a David Carr GU BV $10 then what do you expect..
