One question remains though ...
How would the hobby react if Ebay was to shut down cards from their site?
Just like that, could we go back to the way it was before?

the thing with ebay is the honesty of the sellers to many times i get a card and it has creases or poorer condition plus outragious shipping for 1 card ! i'm a small time collector and cannot buy box's so i have to trade/sell just to keep trading ! i cannot afford $10.00 on a $75.00 card then cannot trade it as the tradevalue due to not being perfect decreases immensly !

i always thought that beckett overpriced stuff so i never bothered to get the magazine. I recently got one and was looking through the 09-10 bowman 48 autos and the bill russell BV 40-60 which is exactly what they sell for on ebay.

Howdy, i think ebay is lowering the values of cards. If beckett has the card at $60 & they see them going for 10-20 on ebay then they will eventually lower the hi value & your card collection loses value.
I personally dont buy there cause i don t want to help lower the value of my collection, & ive seen some i would like to own.
Another thing, u pay $120 a box for eclipse, get a set thats worth about $40 & sell the R/U for $5 on ebay ?!?!?
No wonder $$ are going down on R/U tho they do seem to be flooding the market the last few years & that doesnt help values either.

If ebay announced it was shutting down, I would hire a site designer and go to work on developing an ebay clone just for sports cards and memorabilia.

It's not really that ebay lowers the prices of cards. It decreases supply because unlike before instead of needing a card to be busted out of a pack locally, you can find that card anywhere around the world as long as it's listed. Also, it's not just ebay, this trader site has opened up a lot of lines to cards people would search years for. When I collected I traded and bought cards at shows, with friends, and at shops. Now you can trade with essentially the world. I don't really get why someone would boycott eBay because they don't want to help drive card prices down. ebay effects pricing because anyone can hop on a usually find what they want if their local dealers don't have it, but why would collectors not like being able to get something they want easier and cheaper?
well, if ebay shut down, one of the other auctions sites would take the market share. people love ebay for buying and selling so someone would pick up the slack. If you want to say what if an online market would be gone for good... that would definitely be a tough pill to swallow. I know I wouldn't be able to sell what I do.

This is NOT TRUE AT ALL. If it was true, beckett would tell you where their prices came from and would be able to break down the sales individually.

Beckett is just a guide, it's not a list of legitimate sales prices that are set in stone. I have seen cards go for the BV they are listed, I've seen cards sell for way more that the BV listed, and I've seen them sell for under the BV (most of the time). If price guides didn't exist there would be so many fights over fair trades and I guarantee not as many trades would be getting done on lower end stuff.
