Well, as a casual (at best) hockey fan, I'm pumped about seeing Pens v. Caps outdoors. And I think this Winter Classic is set towards people like me, who don't really watch hockey outside of the Stanley Cup finals and the Olympics.
I'm hoping to find tickets so I can drive down and catch the game.

HNIC is a tradition in Canada, has nothing to do with ratings in the US which is what they are trying to boost here. If NBC (or any other major network) says Saturday night is not the best time for ratings for the US market, then they are probably 100% right as they are the ones who spend millions in research on the matter.
You have to realize that a lot of cable and satelite providers in the US don't offer CBUT/TSN/CBC in their programming, so a lot of people have never even seen HNIC.

I HATE watching hockey on NBC.
Game of the week on Sundays?
Almost guaranteed to include the following: Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Boston, NY Rangers, New Jersey.
Almost every single time.

You're forgetting Washington. Do they have a couple good games? Yeah sure, but half the time it's lopsided and not worth the watch.
