Panini does gaming cards too. They went to a friend of mine to head the development team for a game that they bought the rights to. I can't give the name because it hasn't been formally announced yet.
Anyway, my friend asks me to be on the team and of course I agree. He calls a couple days later saying he talked with an exec about me because I was a sports card collector. This exec calls me about a week later, asking me a bunch of questions about the hobby. The first thing I brought up was the problem of patch faking. Next thing you know, Panini is doing a database to help in the fight against the fakers. We talked for a while about inserts versus parallels and how jersey cards in higher end sets was a waste of time and collector's money. While he was interested in what I said, I didn't get the feeling this is gonna change any time soon. We also touched on sticker versus on card autos. He told me it was just easier to get stickers done and add them later rather than have the cards printed before meeting with the athlete.
Now, I'm not saying that the database thing was strictly because of this talk, but I thought it was funny. We still haven't heard about the card game yet though.
Been waiting on that call for around 5 months.

it'll never happen. the NHL/PA is trying to do away with exclusives. if they didn't Panini would have never have a shot with Gretzky, Crosby, Ovechkin, Messier, Yzerman, Howe, Orr, etc. what's left to find out is if the league can enforce this move since they're only a 3rd party and have nothing to do with the contracts each person signs with UD.
also, guys like Jagr, Sakic, and a few others who don't sign for UD already sign for ITG.

If the PA is really serious about it, I would imagine this could be done with Crosby and Ovechkin. Not sure how they could order retired superstars not to do it though.... unless they're willing to threaten the manufacturers with their licence?
