you call it bitter - i call it relief.
Kovalchuk is not a player i wanted in LA. sure, it would have been nice to have his goals, but he does not make a team better. he's mostly a selfish player that doesn't have the type of game to succeed in the playoffs.
i'm not saying a team can't win with him on it, but not if he's the main guy. and he clearly has not got to the point in his career where he'd be willing to be a role player. he wanted $100M, he got $100M. now you have to deal with the fallout of an aging goalie, a selfish scorer that doesn't have to exert himself ever again now that he has his $100M contract, your best player going into his last year of his contract likely unhappy that he's not "the guy" anymore, and a team needing to dump valuable vets because Kovalchuk needed $100M.
call it what you want - but it's far from bitter.
my team has the best d-man in the league and he's 20, a top 10 center in the league @ 22, two goalies under 25 with #1 talent, the youngest core in the league and a bunch of blue chip prospects coming...that's sounds sweet to meLast edited by gretzky99; 07-19-2010 at 07:14 PM.

100 million over 17 years equals roughly under 6 million a year... giving them plenty of money to resign Parise to a long term contract. From some of the posts i saw you had under the hockey chat forum over two weeks ago you wanted him. Just a change of mind on what you think of him after he doesn't choose the Kings I guess. Because i know that this "a selfish scorer that doesn't have to exert himself ever again now that he has his $100M contract" would not have been said if he signed with the Kings.

i wouldn't have given Kovalchuk $100M. DL offered him 15 years/$80M. personally, i think that was too much in total dollars.
i know you won't understand this, but Kovalchuk is the wrong guy at the wrong time for the Kings. he's a one-way player that scores goals in the regular season. it's the same thing as Heatley. DL could have traded for Heatley but he didn't because he and Kovalchuk are cut from the same cloth.
i don't care about regular season. i don't care about stats. i care about Cups. Kovalchuk won't win a Cup. Heatley won't win a Cup.
guys that win Cups are character guys that play the entire ice...Toews, Staal, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Crosby. those are the types of guys you build a team around.
i believe Kopitar is that kind of guy. we'll see. i know Kovalchuk isn't that type of guy...we'll see if he changes. NJ has a chance to change him because of guys like Brodeur. the Kings don't and that's why it's better he's not there.

Ok, so basically you think the Kings GM made him a stupid offer... fine then i guess your comments are alright. Also the only reason Kovalchuk and the devils failed after he came over last year was because of Lemaire's system now with Maclean i think they will be fine.

i don't think the offer was "stupid", i just think the term was too long. i just posted in the other thread what Kovalchuk is going to be paid over the next seven years...in a nutshell, $70M over the next seven years - that is absolutely crazy.
it will be interesting to see if the NHL let's this contract go through. it's a mockery of the system. he gets 70% of the money in the first 40% of the contract.
Kovalchuk wanted $100M regardless and wasn't going to sign until he got it. i don't want a player like that on my team.

I think Kopitar is a superstar.
