They still want Ron Grahame, so they deal their 1980 1st round pick to Boston to get him. They never get a chance to select Jim Fox.

Bruins use that pick on Brent Sutter, don't draft Barry Pederson at #18, taking Moe Mantha instead. Without Pederson in the fold, they never have the trade chips to get Cam Neely out of Vancouver, and he's dealt to the Hartford Whalers instead.

This leads to a Hartford Cup victory in 1986, and another in 1989. The Whalers never move to Carolina as a result of the team's success.
