    Restricted Free Agent Question

So after Thorton getting signed, I looked online to see who was an upcoming free agent this summer and I see that Doughty will be a restricted free agent.

Now as a Wings homer I kind of got excited (though I know it won't happen) at the possibility of signing him, especially if Mr. Norris does retire.

My question is what exactly would have to happen for him to come to Detroit. Since he is restricted does he have to refuse to sign and the Wing's give compensation or what?

Thanks all! I was just wondering, I know he (most likely) will not be a Wing I just was curious as to what it would take.

I could be wrong but I believe

He can not be talked to until July 1st (or whenever free agency opens)
He has to accept a qualifying offer from the Wings
Kings have the ability to match that offer to keep him
If Kings dont, there is compensation (just not sure what it was - Draft picks)

Wings should definitely go for it. I'm sure he'll stay a King but he is the bloody perfect replacement for Lidstrom.

One of the reasons why the Kings didnt get Kovy was because it was too much and would have handcuffed the Kings on signing Doughty.....so I am 100% confident he will get signed

Kings have to give him a qualifying offer first, I believe it has to be at least 10% more then his current salary. Doughty can except or reject.

Compensation is based on what he signs for.
