    Hey Barrie,

Awesome price for a 1/1 Shield card of Roy. Great pickup for sure. It's a surprise that the price turned out to be so low, but congrats on a card that would probably book $2,000 or more if it wasn't NPDTS!

The Habs version only garnered an extra $100: http://cgi.ebay.com/2009-10-Ultimate-Logo-Shield-1-1-Patrick-Roy-Auto-Patch-/170592563769?pt=US_Hockey_Trading_Cards&hash=item2 7b81bf239

Shields just aren't what they used to be, especially for players such as Roy that have been overdone.

It always sucks to come to a realization that your collection is dropping drastically in value.

How do you explain Carey Price sells for $2000? Crosby for $3500? Roy for $800-$900 in regular circumstances... give me a break! People asking $8000 for Ovechkin (they won't sell but you will never get it for $1000...)? You should understand guys that few people in this hobby CONTROL the Patrick Roy market, if they don't chase a particular card, the seller won't see the big money. It is as simple as that, no? Same for Gretzky guys, only few collectors set the level of the Gretzky NHL Shields Auto cards. Sellers are stuck with the cards, so eBay is their last option to liquidate. There are reasons why some cards sells for big money, and other cards not. Like some MTO cards made by ITG sells for big bucks, and other are going for few pesos... even if they are all MTO cards.

I applaud the eBay sales of the past 2 weeks, this way when someone here will pull a Roy NHL Shields Auto card they will sell it directly to me for $800-900... this is what a card like this worth according to few people here, right? If I had won any of the card for $2000, I could never get it for cheaper in the future, the timing was so perfect to pass on the cards. The kind of cards that I absolutely want when I see them are cards that will take a place in my Top-10, over than that I will be patient. If someone is a newbie and wasn't active over the past years, looking the past 2 weeks he could resonably think that a Roy Shield Auto card worth $800-900; as a collector/buyer, I have no problem with that. But now, based on the opinions written before my comment, the statement that you guys have now no choice to make is to never call in the future on a forum that an offer of $800-900 cash for this kind of card is a "low ball" offer, this is what it worth according to you.

Then why, being the big Roy Shield collector that you are, did you (or any of the other big Roy collectors) NOT bid on either of these cards? Because they were too cheap!?

I wasn't singling out any particular player with my comment, simply noting that shield sales in general are no where near what they used to be. I have bought and sold shield cards both privately and on Ebay and have watched the Ebay sales. They don't command as much money as they used to. Period. Yes, there are still ones that do go for big money, but those sales are so much more rare than they were even 2 years ago and are almost always BIN where ONE person wants it bad enough. The current economy doesn't support them and the market has been over-saturated. It used to be owning a shield card was very rare now it seems everyone has one or two or ten. They've lost a lot of there cache.

I don't put much stock in auction listings on Ebay when I value my personal cards. I pay premiums for cards I want too just like you, but the fact is when it comes time to part with your cards (and I'm not saying you ever will) you will realize how foolish your spending was. I'm finding that out right now.

I won my first Phaneuf shield in twelve hours ago. I paid ~400$ and it's big money to me. I'm very happy that I didn't need to pay more. I keep it all the time in my Phaneuf pc and I'm very very happy that price was a little bit under 400$. Cheaper cards --> you can get more cards to your pc ;)

Yes it was big money, but if you wanted any Patrick Roy NHL Shields Auto 1/1 cards made between 2003 and 2009, it was the price to pay. They are all owned by people that don't need money. The 2002-03 version or 2003-04 that I don't have in my collection are not available for cheaper in 2011. I even lost a Roy/Brodeur Dual with a $10K bid in the past. The newest ones (2009-10 and newer) made by UD are only with Colorado memorabilia even if with Montreal picture, so they can't match my favorite ones that I bought in the last years, so I will be patient with the newest ones, especially because I know that the online competition is gone and the past 2 weeks totally confirmed this fact. Big deals are not on eBay, they are made directly between individuals with cash on hand. I am the owner of many Patrick Roy NHL Shields cards, but I know I won't get all, so I select the ones. To let go the 2 cards inside the past 2 weeks was a good strategic move in my perspective of what I collect/buy. Don't worry, I'll probably get emails about them over the next months.

They would be available for cheaper if the people who owned them weren't so scared about how much they would lose. Money trumps all, and nobody, no matter how wealthy they are, wants to take a big loss. You lost a Roy/Brodeur at $10,000, but now there is one sitting on EBay at $4000 untouched. Current and future releases devalue all past releases too.

    .................................................. ...........................

I predicted in 2002 that Game Used cards would destroy the market, and it is. Fakes, Overpricing, you name it. There are now more GU than rare inserts/parallels on the market.

The Carey Price RC cards sold in the thousands of dollars a couple of years back now fetching $125.00 are good examples. That guy that just paid $20K for the 1/1 Ovy Cup Rookie? He won't get half of that back in 5 or 50 years.

I absolutely thrive in the 90's insert market. They are far more rare than Game Used, nicer looking card design, much tougher to pull, and are slowly making a comeback.

Show me a Game-Used card anywhere that is cooler than a 97-98 Crown Royale Freeze-Out Die-Cut.

I also have a ton of Vintage, which to me is the starting place for all collections.
