These may not qualify as the biggest busts of all-time. But good for a laugh anyways, as I just looked at my "investment box" from 10 years ago. In it, I have stacks of RCs of:
1990 Ben MacDonald
1990 Dave Justice
1989 Ramon Martinez
1986 Bobby Bonilla
I'm thinking of using them for firewood or something.

I like this topic... I can't really think of anyone off the top of my head that hasn't been mentioned, but there is one- weren't Darius Miles RC Autos on fire when he first went into the NBA? I could be wrong on that one tho

You could name 50 players easy in the past 5 years, but a lot of that is because of the internet and all these prospect reports hyping people up to be the next big thing, like Chad Hermansen, Drew Henson (Baseball), Dee Brown, etc.etc.etc. But if you go back in time, I don't think there was a bigger bust than Brien Taylor of the Yankees in the early 90's. It combined the height of popurlarity of the sports card market with an overhyped Yankees draft pick coupled with this guy hurting himself in a barfight to help his cousin. Priceless!!

GreenBeans: Brian Taylor was a big bust. I remember everybody was wanting that Topps Auto so bad because it was a rarity to see a Top Draft Pick in a Major Set. And I think he was the Yankee's #1 pick and the #1 overall pick. Plus he had pitched 2 no-hitters in high school. There was so much hype surrounding this kid. To think...the Yankees could of gotten Manny Ramirez, Shawn Estes, Cliff Floyd, Doug Glanville, Pokey Reese, and Aaron Sele with the first pick. Taylor never made it out of the minors. Let alone he got hurt in that fight. I think it was Tampa's player that I mistakened for as the one being shot. But I think any players within the last 5 years...we cannot judge in Baseball because it is too short. They can have extended careers. Like Dustin Hermanson didn't bloom till this season. So we have to wait untill they call it quits before we decide in baseball because even the old folks like Julio Franco and Oil Can Boyd pops up after years of being gone.
Daikel: I think Van Poppel was a bust because of the hype around him. But he was no bigger than Taylor or Kevin Maas. Maas had broke the record of quickest to hit 10 hrs and all his cards skyrocketed. But at least Van Poppel stuck around to collect more paychecks. Now Irabu...he was a player that had too much hype. But he's still not a hobby bust. There's plenty of people in Japan willing to pay $$$ for his cards.
101589dpm: Come on...give Miles a shot. At least he played more than the 2 or 3 seasons Ralph Sampson played.
wavescrashing: Cade McNown always get's overshadowed by Couch and Akili Smith. So he's not even mentioned in the category of bust because he was drafted down the line. When you got top guys like Tony Mandarich or Todd Marinovich...that's something else. But hey...even guys like Tommy Maddox who was considered a big time bust...came back and made a name for himself.

Actually comparing Michael Jordans hype entering Baseball.........it was one of the biggest Baseball Hobby Busts. Only his Hoops legacy is holding up his cards!

since the title says HOBBY bust, i will have to go with elton brand, #1 pick, co-rookie of the yr and has had a good career and is incredibly underrated if you ask me probably due to being on crappy teams his entire career, anyway way back when i pulled his encore rc which then booked at 100, still have that card and it now books at 10 and his cards in general dont sell well at all which is a shame for a guy whos averaged a double double (20/10) his entire career including his rookie season, last players to average 20/10 rookie year before him was duncan and shaq

Yes that is sad. Elton Brand has been nothing but solid. I've always said Brand was in the same tier as Stoudemire, Nowitzki, and Rasheed Wallace. He's not quite the same as Garnett or Duncan...but it's a shame. Just like Karl Malone was always overshadowed by Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and Hakeem Olajuwon...just because he never won a championship. But one thing you can say about Malone though....he was (IMO) the greatest player PF of all time.
